Freddy Shepherd Aiming High (again)
Quotes from Sporting Life attributed to Toon Chairman Freddy
Shepherd regarding the future of the club: "I want
to assure our supporters that I will do whatever is necessary to get
us back towards the top of the Premiership, however unpopular or popular
that may be," Shepherd said in his programme notes.
"As chairman, I will do exactly what is best for Newcastle United,
starting as soon as the last ball is kicked.
"Whatever anyone says about our recent run of disappointing results,
you simply cannot get away from an injury situation at the club which
has reached epidemic proportions.
"You cannot, though, write 2004-05 off totally because we have had
a great run in the FA Cup and a great run in the UEFA Cup, and no-one
should forget that.
"However, I am the first to admit that the Premier League has been
disappointing. There have been highs and lows and the finishing position
will unfortunately be a low, but the good thing about football is
that there is always another chance and everybody starts the following
season level.
"What we have to do next year is what Everton have done this year.
Last season Everton were near the bottom, but look at what they have
achieved this season - they are favourites for the fourth Champions
League place in the Premiership.
"That is what we have to aim for in 2005-06 - we have to do an Everton."

Toon Coach Phil Boersma Leaves
Speaking in his post-match interview,
United's assistant manager Alan Murray has confirmed that Phil
Boersma, a member of Graeme Souness' backroom staff, has left
the club by 'mutual consent' just seven months into his £150-200,000
a year job.
Murray said:
"Phil has left the club, but I am not here to talk about Phil,
and we will leave it at that."
Match Report: NUFC 0-0 Crystal Palace
Newcastle United continued their goalless
streak at home with another 0-0 draw against a plucky Crystal Palace
side who pinched a valuable point in their battle against relegation.
On another day United could have ran out easy winners but it was not
to be as the Toon squandered several chances in a disappointing afternoon
at St. James' park.
