We've Found Shearer's Successor At Last!
As club Captain that is...
Steven Taylor on what it means to him to play for Newcastle United:
"Before I signed my first contract at Newcastle there were a few
other clubs interested in me, and I think Manchester United were one
of them.
"It was obviously very flattering to be linked with a huge club like
that and I could not believe it.
"But there was no way I was ever leaving here.
"When you are a Geordie there is only one team you want to play for,
and that's Newcastle. I am no different.
"I appreciate what it means to play for this club because I am a local
lad, have supported them all my life and have been at the club since
I was nine.
"That's why I will always be the last to leave the pitch while I show
my appreciation to the supporters.
"People who don't come from up here do not understand what it means
for a local lad to be playing in front of 52,000 Geordies every week
- or the few thousand who go to away games. I do!
"So to lose any game for Newcastle is disappointing. But to lose big
games in Lisbon and in Cardiff, in front of so many fans who travelled
to both games, was just a nightmare.
"The only way I EVER want to leave is if the club want to sell me."
Taylor on Alan Shearer:
"I watch Alan in almost everything he does at the training ground
and on matchdays. I see how he handles himself and try to follow him
in every way.
"And we have some battles against each other in training! He gives
me stick and there are times I leave with bumps and bruises.
"But that's great. It can only do me good in the long-term. I'm learning
the game against the best in the business."
Taylor on working with Tony Adams and Toon boss Graeme Souness:
"Tony Adams was the manager down there and, as a defender, he's
probably my all-time hero. So I've worked with two playing legends,
as well as a couple of great managers in Sir Bobby Robson and Graeme
Souness."
"I'm developing all the time under the gaffer.
"He's brought me into the team, given me a chance and made some comments
about me that have meant a lot.
"I'll always be grateful to him."
Taylor on the possibility of one day leading his club and playing
for England:
"Captaining this club is beyond my wildest dreams. And although
playing for England is obviously an ambition, that's also something
I'm not thinking about.
"My priorities now are to hold down a place and do well in the Newcastle
team and the England Under-21 side. Everything else can wait."
Another contender - Jean-Alain Boumsong speaking about the
current situation at the club:
"First of all, we are footballers - not anything else - and we
have to give the best we can on the pitch and give the best image
of the club.
"It is a very, very good club with a stained image - and we have to
get that good image back, especially for the kids.
"We are very proud to wear this jersey - but we have to show that
we deserve to wear the jersey.
"We have to be professional and finish the season well and prepare
for next season."

Match Report: Man Utd 2-1 NUFC
Wayne Rooney produced arguably the
strike of the season to help Manchester United to continue their hoodoo
over a patched-up Newcastle United. A week after the one-sided affair
in Cardiff the two teams went head to head this time in the league.
The result was the same: a win for Manchester United, but the match
was not.

Should NUFC Use Robert As Bait For Sean Wright-Phillips?
As the local media announce the alleged
interest in our mercurial French wizard Laurent Robert from Stuart
Pearce's Man City, surely this would be a good time for Souness to
win some support back by using Robert as a makeweight in a transfer
swoop for City's England star Shaun Wright-Phillips? The Frenchmen
seems destined for the exit at St. James' Park so surely the Scot
should be canny about letting a creative player go by replacing him
with a young, hungry wizard on the right-wing?
