Should
The NUFC Use Robert As Bait For Sean Wright-Phillips? |
25th April 2005

As
the local media announce the alleged interest in our mercurial French
wizard Laurent Robert from Stuart Pearce's Man City, surely this would
be a good time for Souness to win some support back by using Robert
as a makeweight in a transfer swoop for City's England star Shaun
Wright-Phillips? The Frenchmen seems destined for the exit at St.
James' Park so surely the Scot should be canny about letting a creative
player go by replacing him with a young, hungry wizard on the right-wing?
Newcastle have never looked balanced in midfield since the departure
of Nolberto Solano to Aston Villa last season with the likes of Jenas,
Dyer, Ambrose, Milner and even Bellamy asked to fill the void on the
right of midfield. Maybe Wright-Phillips is that player to fill this
position for us? He is a natural winger, skilful on the ball, lightning
fast and can score goals. Isn't he the ideal player for Newcastle
United?
Whether Phillips would come to Newcastle is another question though
with reported interest from Chelsea and Arsenal who will inevitably
be able to offer the chance of playing in Europe's elite competition,
the Champions League. It's unlikely that Phillips would chose the
North East over North or West London seeing as we will be struggling
with playing domestic football next season (unless the InterToto Cup
brings some salvation that is).
Having seen his dad, Ian Wright, become Arsenal's all-time top goalscorer
and etch himself into the legend status at Highbury, maybe Phillips
will opt to follow in his father's footsteps? However, this could
also work against Arsenal and he may see it as a club where he will
forever be in the shadow of his father? Chelsea on the other hand,
well, do they need him for a start? Therefore, if these two clubs
are showing no signs of interest in him then maybe this Robert/City
link might prove a good foil to land the England International?
I for one will be sad to see Robert leave as he has given me many
fond memories, notably his two goals against Spurs last season. However,
if he does leave then maybe we should use him to our advantage, god
knows he has used us to his in the past, and try and lure a player
of Phillips' quality to our football club. Just an option and I hope
Freddy and Souness are looking into it at the least. |
