Newcastle United Goal 37 Minutes: Alan Shearer
A left-wing free-kick from Robert was headed past Ricardo by Shearer
from 12-yards out after clever work by Ameobi who held off Big Al's
marker for an excellently constructed and well worked goal straight
from the training pitch.
Graeme Souness on the match:
"I'm pleased to get the game out of the way to be honest.
"It has been a stressful week and we did not play at our normal level,
we looked nervous but overall the 90 minutes has been and gone and
we have a small advantage to take away next week. "Sporting
Lisbon had a lot of the ball but they didn't really hurt us that often.
We are glad with the victory, and the clean sheet, but we know we
can play a lot better. "It been a difficult few days
for all of the players and there was a lot of pressure on the lads
tonight but we have come through it well. "We are hopeful
to have Babayaro, Kluivert and Titus Bramble all back for the return
leg next Thursday. "Alan was superb throughout. He makes
average balls into good balls. It was a proper captain's display tonight,
and he lead by example." Lee Bowyer on his standing
ovation from the crowd:
"I was delighted with the reception from than fans - it meant a lot
to me. "When the manager told me I was going on for Kieron,
I just thought, here we go then, it's 50/50. "I honestly
didn't know what to expect from the fans, and it was obviously a concern
to me because the fans are very important and have a right to voice
their opinions. "They know what they are going to get
from me in games, and that is 100 per cent. "All I asked
for was a chance from the fans, and I thank them for giving me that.
"I've apologised all week, and I'll apologise again
because I've let down the club, the fans, the players - everybody
really. "All I want to do now is focus on my football
and put this behind me. I'm gutted to be missing games and that will
stay with me for a long time, but hopefully I will get a chance in
Lisbon next week and I can give my all in that game."
Alan Shearer on the match:
"I hope 1-0 will prove enough for us, and it certainly gives us a
lot to play for over there. "We could have scored one
or two more on the night, and perhaps we should have, but we cannot
complain because we worked our socks off for that result.
"We kept a clean sheet too, which is very important, but there's still
a long way to go because Sporting have shown what a very good side
they are technically. "The aim has to be to score an
away goal. We know we can score goals wherever we play. It will be
tough, but they have to come at us a bit more and hopefully that will
leave gaps for us to exploit. "It's been a tough week
for everyone at the club, but we've sent the fans home happy and that
was the main objective."

Sporting Lisbon manager, José Peseiro on the match:
"Sporting did their best.
"We created opportunities hoping to get a draw, but we cannot
dismiss the good play of Newcastle United.
"We will be without Liedson for the second match, but Sporting
will play with its best team and we will be motivated to get the result
we need.
"We will be playing in front of our own fans and if they get
behind us, we will do our best to win. |
