Pre-Season Match Report In Association With Toon Ale

Lucky 7 As Toon Hit The Spot

Newcastle finally won a penalty shoot-out by beating Hong Kong club side FC Kitchee 7-6 after ending the 90 minutes 1-1 this afternoon, our first win in a shoot-out since 98 when we beat the Smoggies. The spot-kick success is only our 5th in 17 attempts (all successes coming in none competitive matches).

Bobby made only two changes from the side that started against Thailand last Thursday by bringing in Steve Harper (who didn't get on against the Thais') for Shay Given and Lee Bowyer in place of Gary Speed in his preferred central-midfield spot.

The game didn't get off to the best of starts for the Toon when former Chelsea man and guest player of Kitchee Marcel Desailly put the home team 1-0 up after only 14 minutes with a header and that's how the scoreline stayed going into the break, with both sides creating a number of opportunities in the half.

Bobby made 4 changes at half time with Given coming on for Harper, Speed for Darren Ambrose, with Bowyer switching to the right, James Milner for Laurent Robert and Shola Ameobi for Michael Chopra to complete the quadruple change.

The changes done the trick with Newcastle getting more into the game and on 63 minutes they pulled level at 1-1 when James Milner cracked in a 22-yard shot after Shola pulled it back for the £3.6m signing - giving the 18 year old his first goal in a Black & White shirt, the first of many hopefully.

On 72 minutes more changes were made with Steven Taylor coming on for Andy O'brien at the heart of the defence, Jamie McClen for Jermaine Jenas in the middle, Martin Brittain for Bowyer on the right and Lewis Guy for Alan Shearer up front.

Not long after Kitchee brung off goal hero Desailly and another former Premiership star who had also made a guest appearance - Fabrizio Ravanelli, former Smoggies striker.

With the minutes ticking away United's second and final game of their Far East Tour was coming to a head and when the ref blew for full-time, with neither side able to clinch a winner the game went to yet another dreaded penalty shoot-out.

With Shola, Brittain, Speed, Milner, Taylor and Bramble all putting their spot-kicks away and with the score at 6-6 the pressure was on Kitchee's Cheung but Given saved his shot - meaning Hughes could win it with his kick and that's what he did to give the Toon the victory. A special moment for Hughes in particular who missed the final spot-kick at St. James' Park last season against Partizan Belgrade which sent Newcastle out of the Champions League.

So some luck from 12-yards, no major injuries to report of and another good work out for the squad brings an end to the two game Far East Tour - well done Sir Bobby and the lads.

Next up: Ipswich Vs The Toon, Wednesday 28th July, Portman Road, K.O 7.45pm

Match Reaction From Sir Bobby

"It's very nice to see Newcastle United win a penalty shoot-out at last and it's very nice to receive a winner's medal for something.

"It would be even nicer if we get to the end of the season and we've got another one. But as I said after the Thailand game, the main purpose of this trip is to get the players fit and I was as pleased with the way the players responded to that as I was with anything else.

"We've played in very difficult conditions, it was very warm, but the fitness of our players, as it did in Thailand, has stood up well. The players have actually been fresher than I thought they would be to be honest. Fitness levels are not tiptop, but they're well on the way and that's what we're looking for."

Toon Army Match Reaction

Mark From Hong Kong wrote in:
"As a Geordie living in Hong Kong I bow to those who see the team every week. I was born a Geordie, grew on the banks of the Tyne, Seaton Sluice and Whitley Bay. Enough about the past. If you have the vid of the game against Kitchee I am the bald guy who started the wave - better than no participation at all. On to football - Milner played his heart out and scored the goal - well taken from the inside right position. He danced around a few earlier on the left wing also (I am now a fan). Shola also did well. But hey it was a friendly and we saw the lads play so we are happy for now."

Hggcraig (forum member) said:
"Am I dreaming or did Newcastle just win a penalty shootout, maybe we will sign Rooney, Ronaldinho and Zidane after all..."
