Couple of years back I was loving the American folk/country stuff, my tendency to keep listening to what I've not heard dragged me away a bit, but I've enjoyed reaquainting myself tonight. Devendra Banhart has just released a new album, but rejoicing in the Hands is still my favourite. Playful and sinister at the same time (a bit too interested in childish things) he writes some superb lyrics "It's a sight to behold, when you've got some old words to mould, and you can make them your own". lush figering too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cig2Ep-4udgSix Organs of Admittance do generally instrumental stuff, it's all acoustic hypnotising and haunting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mtO8SoFpPPgNeko Case has been one of my favourite artists these last 5 years or so. Amazing voice. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BOa5BujYYPQJoanna Newsom writes some of the most bizzare and beautiful songs. Always admired anyone that can play a harp. One of the best live performances I've seen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYl0uLrXP7UJenny Lewis. Also awesome. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3kllyPnkLxYYou could stick others in there like Iron and Wine, Vashti Bunyan, Regina Spektor etc. but as much as I like them, I'm not as keen on those.

A masterclass in deadpanning and a wicked tune. I get the impression that madras was a bit of a goth in his time. When being a goth meant taking speed and doing acid not the emo twats you see today.
