1  NUFC Discussion / NUFC Forum / Re: is FF daft enough... on: Yesterday at 12:16:05 PM
From a playing point of view, I preferred Beattie. I also preferred Beattie to Kluivert even if he had cost the club 6m, I personally would have paid the money, and I said so at the time.

However if you consider the fact that Beattie was going to cost 6m quid whereas kluivert was on a free [although higher wages probably] the board/chairman feel they have to impose financial restrictions on any signing, because they have budget. If we couldn't afford the money to buy Beattie, then there isn't really an argument about it I would say, ANY manager has to accept this. It's not sticking your nose in if you don't have the money, its running the club. !!! Look at Leeds and their reckless signings under Ridsdale, and their loaning money to buy players.

Managers want certain players, but the board decides if they can afford someone or not. If they can't they have to take an alternative. this is how it has to work, it can't work any other way. If anything happened re-Kluivert and Beattie, that is what happened. All clubs do this. Why do you think Liverpool didn't buy Owen before we did ? Why do you think Arsenal sold Overmaars, Petit and Anelka ? In those cases, it is simply a case of too much money to turn down. Those players made Arsenal a huge profit. Did Wenger want to sell them ? I would say the board wanted that profit, and Wenger being a genius found great replacements, but I am guessing, just like those who guess about what happens at Newcastle.

This is, of course, true - but to me the signing of Kluivert smacks of board interference - we couldn't afford Beattie and it seemed to me that Shep picked someone we could afford, although that's just opinion. There are occasions where he does seem to have interfered though - signing Butt for £2.5m instead of spending £3m on Carrick, the player Bob professed to want in his book, and the sale of Speed for what was, essentially, a pittance.

It seems to me that Fred did undermine Sir Bobby a couple of times with transfer dealings, I just hope it doesn't happen to Glen, and he gets to bring in the men he wants - provided we can afford them, obviously.

Sir Bobby wanted Beattie, but FS thought Kluivert would shift more shirts, would cost 6m less and would put bums on seats.

I think its amazing how people are, as I have said, re writing history to suit themselves. He obviously has absolutely NO idea how many people were ecstatic with the signing of Kluivert on football grounds, both on these message boards and the man on the street. And the amount of people who simply were not interested in signing Beattie either.

I may be misinterpreting the situation here, but did you not just condem the idea that Shep would interfere in the transfer side, and then commend him for doing so?

I think you should read it again mate. I have never said a chairman should interfere with his managers decisions as to who he wants to keep or move out of the football club. This is why clubs appoint managers, to make these professional decisions, right or wrong.

Its a simple fact that people were happy with Kluivert rather than Beattie at the time. [except me, which HTT will confirm if he is still around somewhere]. A lot of people even pointed out how good a deal it was "to save the club a 6m quid transfer fee". To say otherwise is simply re-writing history, but that is becoming a regular occurence on here. Especially with regard to the appointing of managers who were trophy winners, yet the club "can't attract or appoint big name trophy winning managers".

Aye, I agree it was fact that people were happy with Kluivert joining, and I was one of them - not ashamed to admit it. Just that it seems a little contradictory to your statement:

"Secondly. Your opinion that he interferes with the buying and selling of players, is nothing other than an opinion. Would YOU pay someone a few million quid a year to take control of the football team then tell him how to do his job ?"

Since it seems to be a generally accepted fact that signing Kluivert was, in the main, down to him, when Sir Bob wanted Beattie. There are other examples in Bobs book, such as selling Speed and going for Butt instead of Carrick.

He's class, simple as. And he still gets the 306 back to Jesmond from the Toon!

What do you think will happen to him then? Will he be moved to third choice keeper for a season, with Caig out, or will he be moved somewhere on loan?

To be honest, I would have thought at his age a year as third keeper would be valuable, learning from Harper and Shay ad getting the odd game on the bench, and maybe moving somewhere on loan in another year, when he's that little bit older, more experienced, and less likely to let his head drop after one mistake.

So, did he play in the end?
If so, how did he do?
6  NUFC Discussion / NUFC Forum / Re: Jermaine Jenas on: May 26, 2006, 02:35:13 PM
I don't hate anyone but JJ is a ****.  Firstly I'll say right away I took the day off work and went on the drink to celebrate the fact we'd robbed Spurs of £7m, because that's what it was, day light robbery.  He was absolutely shite in 95% of his toon career, couldn't finish, passing normally pish, no skill, no vision, "ah but he had a good engine" so's Thomas the fuckin Tank Engine but he wouldn't get a game for the toon!  To think we paid less for Parker than they paid for him is hysterical as far as am concerned.

What gets me is his official reason for leaving.  I wanted to better myself.  Better himself by joining a far smaller club?  Edgar Davids must laugh when he plays alongside him compared to the players he's been used to.  Everyone knows there are far more huckles in London, and that is the be all and end all for him wanting away as far as I'm concerned.

But surely he has?

He seems to have had a far better season for Spurs than either of his last two in Newcastle, so the move has done him good. I think he's massively overrated, and still shouldn't be anywhere near the England squad, but fair play as far as I'm concerned, the move seems to have benefitted both us and him.
7  NUFC Discussion / NUFC Forum / Re: Jermaine Jenas on: May 26, 2006, 12:23:16 PM
I think many of us feel "betrayed" by Jenas.

Why?
8  NUFC Discussion / NUFC Forum / Re: Jermaine Jenas on: May 25, 2006, 09:41:54 PM
As an England fan i'd rather he didn't go to the World Cup, that's all the injury thing meant Fenners.

I see, fair enough, took it the wrong way I guess - just seen those sentiments on this board too many times obviously. (By the way - cruciate ligaments? Seems a bit harsh, surely a metatarsel would do?  Wink!) As an England fan I'm in the same boat as you in that I'd prefer he didn't go, but I've noticed comments like these a number of times, just find it hard to understand I guess.
9  NUFC Discussion / NUFC Forum / Re: Jermaine Jenas on: May 25, 2006, 09:32:34 PM
Seems to be pretty roundly hated by those on here, if what I've read in the England B thread is anything to go by.

A young English player, who had half a good season, a couple of duff ones, and made us a £2m profit. Why so hated?

I knkow about the goldfish quotes, but never actually saw any quotes from him on the subject, as far as I'm aware they were just attributed to him by Souness (I may be wrong here, if so feel free to prove me so) - and there are plenty on here who will not accept what Souness attributed to Bellamy.

So, why do you hate him so much?

It's a fact that many of those who hate him now only take that view because he's gone. For a long, long time I was one of a small group of people who could see his limitations and posted about it. The majority thought he was fantastic until he departed. Very shallow, but there you go.

Are you kidding? Most people recognised he was shite for ages. Only a select few defended him throughout IIRC.

So he was shit? So what, we still made a profit. It's hardly akin to Marcelino. Not rating a player doesn't mean you should be upset when he scores for England B, or wish him injsry before the game starts.

To the person who asked if I was a mackem or a spurs fan, no I'm not. Do you struggle with reading? I'm not saying I like him, or rate him, I'm trying to understand why it seems to have become the 'done thing' to hate him. I'm pretty much ambivalent to him tbh, I hope he's terrible against us, but as far as I'm concerned he's another Pistone. Didn't work out, moved on. Except we made a profit on him.

Cheeky stubbon little rat, to be honest doesn't deserve a topic on him, lock it/delete.

Why?

Also, I understand about the England team thing, but I feel the same about Crouch, and I don't call him names when he gets in the team.

12  NUFC Discussion / NUFC Forum / Re: Owen's heading on: May 25, 2006, 08:55:07 PM
I don't know about better than Shearer, but I've long thought that Owen is fantastic in the air, in front of goal anyway.

He may not win as many as others, due - obviously - to his height, but as he has shown on a number of occasions he is an exceptionally good finisher in the air.

Historical/Fiction, try "One day in the life of Ivan Denisovich" by Alexander Solzhenistyn. It does what it says on the cover, it's one day in the life of someone in a prisoner camp in Stalinist Russia. Quality.
14  NUFC Discussion / NUFC Forum / Re: Centre-midfield on: May 14, 2006, 02:57:29 AM
just me or does faye not look as bad as he should by deliberatly hiding in games, literally keeping away from the ball.if he doesn't have it he can't give it away

I don't think he deliberately hides. He just isn't good enough at ANYTHING to actually keep up with the game, or indeed know where the ball is.

yet at pompey he was ok,wanted to be involved,a poor mans water carrier, won a good bit of ball and didn't give it away much.all in the prem.

I don't recall seeing him much for them (which is NOT the mark of a good defensive midfielder, as per Viera and Parker), all i can comment on is what i've seen for us, home and away. And thats a big steaming pile of african crap, in every premiership game.

I have to agree on how he's played for us, but my Pompey supporting mate claims, even now, that he was very good for them. How?
15  NUFC Discussion / NUFC Forum / Re: FA Cup Final on: May 13, 2006, 08:13:50 PM
Has staying on your line been scrapped?

Agreed. Reina was miles off his line for his three saves. Pathetic ref bottled it.

i think you need to read the rules again. you only need to start on your line, you can jump forward. i know for a fact his first save was legal, and i assume the 2nd and 3rd were too (the second one i can only remember from behind the goal cam angle, and it looked legal from that)

i thought the ref was brilliant today, real class.

I thought the keeper could only jump off his line after the ball is kicked. Before the kick, he's allowed to move, but he has to stay on the line.

Reina jumped off his line just before the kick. I don't particularly blame him, because they all do it.

Is there a ref in the house?

Correct.
16  NUFC Discussion / NUFC Forum / Re: Steven Gerrard on: May 13, 2006, 08:12:03 PM
If Sven played to his strengths instead of playing him deep you would see his Liverpool form for England. Saying that you won't see that unless Lumpard gets injured.

I agree with that. Sven tries to play him in holding midfield, in keeping with his policy of picking the best players and hoping they work rather than picking the best team. With Rooney (probably) out, we have to build the team around our second best player, Stevie G. Hopefully he'll have a defensive mid operating alongside him (and maybe Lampard as well) like he always does at Liverpool.

18  NUFC Discussion / NUFC Forum / Re: Spurs - It was a stomach virus! on: May 11, 2006, 05:28:37 PM
If stomach virus is true, will the Marriott hotel be suing Spurs for the negative press they've been receiving in the wake of the incident?

Di Canio? Seems like the type..
Does Robert's against Fulham count?
20  General Discussion / General Chat / Re: University of Warwick? on: May 10, 2006, 04:39:00 PM
Very nice campus based university, nearly went there myself but chose Nottingham in the end as I wanted to be nearer a city. From what I can remember it had very modern facilities (in the maths department at least) and the campus was gorgeous in the sun.

Also know someone who goes there, seems to really like it, and it certainly has an excellent reputation at the moment, particularly for English and History iirc.
