It's popped up on .com, and a few other sources have picked it up.
Newcastle ready to renew interest in Larsson from the Sport Telegraph.
Graeme Souness promised last night that Michael Owen would not be rushed back from his broken foot and the Newcastle manager will now consider signing a replacement in the January transfer window which opened at midnight on Saturday.
Souness said: "It's rest now for Michael and you have to get this type of injury right first time, it's like Scott Parker, he was out for the best part of a year, nine months. And he ended up having it pinned I believe, so we will have to wait and see what the surgeon says.
"We had key men out even before Michael was added to the list. There is no doubt that Kieron Dyer and Emre would make us a better passing team. But the loss of Michael is, without taking anything away from any other player, the hardest. He is the last player you would want to get injured.
"You can maybe be on the back foot and he will snatch a goal and show a whole different light on the game. Michael is not best pleased."
It is understood that one potential target is Henrik Larsson, the former Celtic striker. Larsson was courted by Newcastle two years ago when former manager Sir Bobby Robson attempted to take him to St James' Park when the Swede confirmed he was leaving Celtic Park.
At the time Robson said: "Larsson is someone who could play alongside Alan Shearer - I've no doubt about that."
Now Souness is expected to monitor the availability of Larsson, 34, who suffered his own problems last season when he spent six months on the sidelines after damaging cruciate ligaments against Real Madrid.
Shearer, who has benefited hugely from Owen's return to English football from Real Madrid, is prepared to have to wait for his attacking partner but accepts it could be a long wait.
"Michael doesn't go down easily. He got up, limped off and at half-time it was very sore," said Shearer. "We all know what Michael gives to the team and to lose him for the second half at Tottenham was a big blow.
"It's a big blow for everyone and, in particular, for the club because he will be out for a while."
Shearer, though, accepted the clash with Paul Robinson was nothing more than an accident. He added: "It was just a challenge. Nobody can be blamed for it; it was one of those things. It was just a clash with their goalkeeper. That was it."
Tord Grip, Sven-Goran Eriksson's assistant, was at White Hart Lane to see Owen limp off at half-time and the England coach said: "Obviously I'm very disappointed for Michael. It's very bad luck for him and for Newcastle United.
"Michael is a fantastic striker and a very important player for his club and for England. I hope he returns to fitness as soon as possible and I will follow his progress very closely."
From .com Now the calendar reads January, rumours of incoming signings are beginning to escalate - Owen's injury putting the forward positions firmly in the spotlight.
While we wait to see whether Luque packs his bags as is being suggested, Monday's papers linked us with a loan move for 34 year-old Swedish forward Henrik Larsson.
The former Celtic hitman is under contract at Barcelona until the end of the current season and has turned down a contract extension as he plans a return to his native land after the World Cup.
One immediate side-effect of the Owen injury may be that reserve striker Michael Chopra isn't allowed to leave the club in this transfer window though - as had been previously rumoured.

The same number of points as a witches hat over Christmas/New Year.
Souness out! Toon fans are turning as gutless as the team.
Exactly.
We could do with more proactive supporters, instead of "someone else will do it", or "it wont change anything" |

Couldn't agree more.
People take the piss or get in a strop when I ask for a source, but it's basically because I'm bored with all the stupid tripe that gets passed around as if it was gospel.
Give him a break man, its a forum, not a public flogging.
Get a grip. |

I cant for the life of me begin to comprehend how Faye's been selected ahead of him in recent games - but then again Graems Souness is manager of NUFC ,and, Faye has been one of his 'proper' signings!
All fairness, Faye has done well recently.
We'll never know if Clarky could of changed those games for the better. |

Souness is a fool, We all know it. Why he put Ameobi on before N'Zogbia i'll never know!!!! Until Souness goes this will continue to happen. Just look at Milner, Wasnt all that good for us but at Villa he seems to be good, Solano was Villa's top goal scorer and there best player, He comes here and he's poor. Boumsong was good for Rangers and he was good in France, He comes here and is Poor. Luque was fantastic in Spain comes here and has been poor. It all comes down to bad Manager and very bad back room staff!!!! Souness is tearing our club apart and when he leaves either now or in the Summer, The damage has been done.
Solano was one of the three i actually rated today.
Was all over the place, keep it up son. |
