Title: Team Spirit

Graeme Souness
A Tyne-Wear derby victory guarantees any Newcastle manager under pressure a stay of execution, but there were two other points to Sunday's victory that should quieten the critics.

The first was Emre capping a fine display by scoring the winner with a long-range free-kick. As well as on results, a manager can be judged by the impact and quality of the players he has signed.  Emre is a class act who would not have signed for Toon if anyone but Souness had been manager. The same probably applies to Michael Owen.

The second is the sight of Emre celebrating his winner with Souness and Scott Parker celebrating the win with his manager.

The Scot may have lost a significant number of the fans but he hasn't lost the dressing room.

The above is taken from football365 and is a good point. Although Souness hasnt exactly set the world alight at Newcastle, the reaction to our goals by our players was a sure sign that they are all pulling in the right direction- a major problem in the back end of the Robson era.

So he'll have a cohesive dressing room. Thats a good thing. But he isn't capable of getting us into the top 6, never mind top 4, so i don't expect him to be welcomed with open arms.

He bought both of those players, of course they are going to like him. At least they're good players - unlike some of the other dross he's brought here for no apparent reason.

Good point indeed and one I noticed for sure. The players all seem to really get on with him and have respect for him.

Long may it continue!

Winning games is the key to it all, Souness will love the players , the players will love the manager, the fans will love the players and some of the fans will get off Souness's back temporarily.

The idea of him being here long term makes me sad.

You never know, Souness was a Liverpool legend which may have swung it. (although isn't Owen actually an Everton fan??)

I imagine it was Shearer who was the deciding factor in Owen coming here, and Luque said in his interview with Revista De La Liga that Shearer was a big factor in coming here.

Give credit to Souness. He was the one who got Shearer to stay on, would we have Owen and Luque otherwise?
