Emre's The Turk Of The Toon!
By Gary Oliver

MIDFIELD maestro Emre says he will never forget his first Tyne-Wear derby - as he conjured up a magical free-kick to give Newcastle United a 3-2 victory over rivals Sunderland.

The Turkish star struck with a stunning 63rd minute effort at the Gallowgate End to ensure Magpie fans could enjoy bragging rights over the Wearsiders.

It was only Emre's fourth Premiership appearance for Newcastle after an injury-affected start to his United career, but his matchwinning derby contribution guarantees him a place in Geordie folklore.

He told nufc.co.uk: "I'm very happy to score my first goal for Newcastle and I'm very happy for the fans to score against Sunderland.

"Alan (Shearer) also wanted to take the kick, but I asked if I could because I felt I could score. I have worked on my free-kicks and corners for five years."

After scoring the winner, Emre ran straight to celebrate with boss Graeme Souness - and he also dedicated his goal as a birthday present to his close friend Ghengis Ertem, who is helping the midfield schemer get used to life in the north east.

The 25-year-old, whose parents were also at St. James' for the game, added: "I scored for Ghengis and I scored for Newcastle today. I celebrated with the manager too because it has been a difficult time for him.

"I wanted to make him happy and the goal is a present for him too because it was a big day."

Emre was on the receiving end of some physical challenges from the Sunderland midfield, with Dean Whitehead picking up a booking in only the first minute for one such offence.

Emre added: "In the first minute I felt a kick on the calf and it was like that for 75 minutes but I am okay.

"When I am fit I want to do everything I can to help Newcastle. We have a good team and we need to keep picking up three points."

Oh well,  the reason I posted this was basically to clear the air about his being injured again.   he aint injured is that all matters that to me   whether he supports souneess or  the guy who was sitting on the 3rd row...  who cares as long as he goes out there and plays real hard....

He's a proper player and guy. He is loyal to Souness who bought him so when a bigger club comes in for him maybe he will stay loyal to us. This lad is quality. I love him.

He's a bit of class like.  Heard he's not happy with the medical staff though, now decided to pay for his own treatment.  No source or owt, just what I've heard.

He is gonna be a Star Player for us, When he stood over the ball i knew he was gonna score!!! I just knew today was gonna be his day. Wonder how he feels scoring his first goal, The winning goal against rivals and it was a fanstastic goal,

Yes , looked class today, but did tend to overplay the ball. Lost it on quite a few occasions, was it due to lack of options or that winners streak of wanting to do it all yourself.
Pleased with what I saw, a great signing Greame!!
Oops, sorry I fo9rgot I can't say anything positive about that person. Please edit at will :tongue3: :tongue3:

I think the same thing occured, and the reason central midfield looked weak on defense is because our defense is so weak.  A team with a good defence should be able to play an attacking creative midfielder with a box to box midfielder in the centre, and still be able to defend well.
