Title: Good Shay Given interview... Post by: OzzieMandias on October 22, 2005, 02:36:56 AM ... in the Guardian:
https://football.guardian.co.uk/comment/story/0,9753,1598158,00.html Excerpt: Quote: "I have got fond memories of being [at Sunderland] but I wouldn't say that I have fondness for the club, no. I am at Newcastle that long now that I have no feelings whatsoever for Sunderland. I just remember it as a stepping stone in my career really, great experience. But this is my ninth season at Newcastle, this club means a lot to me and my son is a born and bred Geordie. This is where I have spent most of my life since I left home at 16. I've a lot of friends here and the club have been great to me. I'd love to win a medal with Newcastle obviously. I've got runners-up medals from the FA Cup." Sadly for Given Newcastle and winners' medals go together like fish and bicycles. At times, such as the end of last season, it has left him demoralised. That was when he publicly, bravely for a player, questioned the "direction" of the club. Since then Scott Parker, Emre and Michael Owen have arrived but Newcastle continue to stagger, with just two wins in nine games. There will be no medals on offer at St James' tomorrow, moreover, just stress and three points. But were it not for Given, Newcastle's outstanding performer, this jarring season could have been even more uncomfortable. Until Jason Roberts scored for Wigan Athletic last Saturday Given had not been beaten in 387 minutes, including a formidable solo display at Portsmouth. Graeme Souness has correctly pointed out that Newcastle have conceded two goals in their past five games. But performances have been worse than results. That is why this derby has acquired the feel of the tumultuous one in August 1999 which spelt the end for Ruud Gullit. "I didn't play in that game, Steve Harper didn't either," said Given. "It was Tommy Wright. I was injured. I was there, got soaked. That was a low time for the club. We were struggling for results. But we weren't going out to lose the game or anything, we were desperate to win and it'll be the same on Sunday. Whatever's happening, it doesn't matter, it's about winning the game. "I don't know if it's as significant as that [Gullit match]. It is difficult for me to comment on that because there are assumptions [in that comparison]. We need a run of wins to get confidence and then build from that. Individually we have a squad of some talent, I'd love to see our best XI on the pitch. That's frustrating but then it's the same for other clubs. So we can't use that as an excuse, we have to knuckle down and work with what we have. "Every time a derby comes around people say it's a must-win game but this really is a must-win game. We have got to win the game, especially after such a disappointing result against Wigan. That was a really bad result for us and it's one we have got to put right. There can be no better way to do that than to beat your arch-rivals at home; I don't think anything else would keep people happy. Three points." Title: Re: Good Shay Given interview... Post by: Master of Puppets on October 22, 2005, 02:17:53 PM shay has got to be one of the most sensible and grounded players in our squad, and possibly one of my footballing heroes.
good to see he speaks his mind but not so contovertially as other players. how hard it must be to play in a club for 9 years, recognised as one of our best players who could walk into almost any other squad, and only have FA cup runner up medal to show for it. Title: Re: Good Shay Given interview... Post by: Toon_Crazy on October 22, 2005, 02:19:58 PM He's a legend. Any other player that good would have left us if we were playing like we are, top guy and I reckon he is still here because he gets on so will with the toon ground.
Title: Re: Good Shay Given interview... Post by: OzzieMandias on October 22, 2005, 02:20:09 PM Well, that's why I quoted the bit I quoted. He's obviously well dug in here. It's home.
Title: Re: Good Shay Given interview... Post by: Dragon55544 on October 22, 2005, 02:22:48 PM Shay is a model professional and kids should look at him as a role model and not the likes of Rooney.
Title: Re: Good Shay Given interview... Post by: OzzieMandias on October 22, 2005, 02:25:44 PM Kids will look to whoever they find most inspiring.
And sometimes maverick geniuses are more inspiring than sensible, stay-at-home family men. Title: Re: Good Shay Given interview... Post by: Sgrey on October 22, 2005, 04:23:08 PM Shay is definetly a hero of mine, great man, great player Howay The Shay :D
Title: Re: Good Shay Given interview... Post by: HTT on October 22, 2005, 05:01:40 PM Alongside Al, my fave Toon player. Other than those two I have no faves, don't even particularly care whether they come or ago now. Long past all that idolising of players, but those two - very special indeed.
Shay is an absolute legen and it's only when he's gone will we realise just how good he was for us. It's typical of our club. We have such a great 'keeper, the most problematic position in a team, and the likes of Arsenal and Man Utd who have had crap 'keepers in comparison, have won stuff. jerzy Dudek isn't fit to lace Shay's boots, and he's a European Cup winner. Shay loves Newcastle, the club, the City, the fans, as he said his bairn is a Geordie, as is Solano's - something they are both very proud of and it wouldn't surprise me if he settled down in the area past his retirement because he loves it so much. He'd have been long gone ages ago if he didn't feel this way about the City and just how settled he really is. He's a pro and wants to win everything, but his family and their happiness comes first and this will dictate what he does, not his bruning ambition to win medals. Funny enough, he's an optimistic person, very very confident, so even now he will still believe he can win trophies with Newcastle. And do you know what, he can. We have everything going for us, great Stadium, City, fans, a decent budget, everything. Hopefully he'll pick up medals because he deserves it, if not with us with another club.
