On Angus Deayton's "One Foot in the Groin" video from a few years back, he runs a "Dirtiest Tackle of the Month" competition, and Souness has 4 or 5 in the 10 candidates.  bluelaugh.gif

I've seen clips of Souness in action but just how good a player was he? According to some, he was one of the best in Europe. I know he liked a tackle but what type of player was he? Could he be compared with Roy Keane or was he better or not as good?

Any comments from some of the older generation would be most appreciated.

My granda says Keane's the best midfielder he's seen since Souness, so from that, I take it he reckons Souness was better.

He got voted the best ever player in Boro's history a few years back, they love him round here.

Not a bad 7-a-side team of recent managers there!

Asked my father about him.

Said he was very much in the Roy Keane mould in terms of tackling, aggression, defensive work, passion etc.

However, he was more technically gifted than Keane and could offer more going forward. Basically Keane with a little bit of Patrick Vieira, which sounds pretty good.

Was one of the best at his time.

According to a few LFC fans who I know, Gerrard isn't a patch on him. Must have been one hell of a player.

Scotland used to produce great talent, it's just dried up completely now. Much like Geordie talent.

Asked my Dad that doesn't care about neither England or Newcastle but he said Souness was awesome as a player. One thing he doesn't forget is Liverpool star side with players like Souness playing Flamengo in the 70ths ...When Flamengo won against Liverpool. The result was like 5-1 or 4-2 or something like that!?

when i've asked me dad and me granda they've both said he was hard as nails... harder than the likes of Pearce, Keane etc.... alot dirtier too... but they said he could give it out but not take it... but he was a much better player than Gerrard, his passes we're alot more intelligent instead of the million dollar ball Gerrard tries to play all the time, alot of Liverpool fans from way back say Callaghan was better than Gerrard too

I saw Souness play a lot of games for Boro and Liverpool and he was as good a defensive player as Keane and probably as creative a player as Scholes.

He didn't score as many goals as Scholes but the ones he did were usually beauties.

He played in the same Liverpool team as Dalglish and Dalglish was a better player for Liverpool than Keegan, which is saying something.

I think Souness won 2 European Cups with Liverpool and countless other silverware.

He was a class act and hard as nails, can't recall him ever getting much back so where anyone said he couldn't take it was coming from I don't know.

I recall Liverpool had played away in Europe against a team that were very physical to say the least.

In the return leg the game was about 10 minutes old when one of their players (who was one of the dirtiest in the first leg) was spotted flat out on the ground, he was carried off on a stretcher. It transpires Souness broke his jaw with a puch.

Needless to say the opposition who had been intimidating in the home were didn't put up a greta fight for the rest of that night.

In those days I think there was only one or two cameras so it was never caught on film.

My dad says he was a hell of a player.

Tough, aggresive and a fantastic tackler and passer.

Put it this way, no player dared mess with him on the pitch.

But he wasn't just harder than nails, he was a great, great player, too.  Definitely one of the main reasons Liverpool were as good as they were (although Liverpool in the 70s and 80s had loads of truly great players).

Shame he couldn't take some of his ability as a player into management.

From what ive seen, he pisses all over Keane on every aspect, tackling, defenceive positioning and his overall play.

Great player, shite manager.

I can remember him scoring a hattrick from outside the box in the old European Cup.  If there are any Pool fans out there, I hope they can confirm the game. I've never seen anyone else do it.

I'm 37 so I wasn't all that old when Souness was at his peak, but I still thought he was brilliant.  Young lads tend to notice flashy stuff more than ballwinner/grit/enforcer type play, so I doubt I would have rated him so much if he was just a hard man.
