Title: Boumsong's Showdown Talks
Post by: eyeball_tickler on April 15, 2006, 09:18:21 AM

"NEWCASTLE flop Jean-Alain Boumsong has held showdown talks with Glenn Roeder in a bid to save his World Cup dream.

The £8.5million defender’s hopes of making the France squad for Germany are in tatters after he was axed following Toon’s 3-1 defeat at Charlton last month.

Former Rangers star Boumsong, 26, will quit St James’ Park this summer but he pleaded with Newcastle’s caretaker-boss to give him a chance in the last five Premiership games of the season.

Roeder said: “He came to see me because he doesn’t want to jeopardise his World Cup hopes. It’s a big issue for him.

“I’ve known players in his position to get angry but, to his credit, he wasn’t. He wanted reassuring that I hadn’t lost faith in him and I gave him that reassurance.

“I don’t need reminding there’s a World Cup and that he wants to be part of the France squad.”

Aussie Craig Moore continues his centre-back partnership with Titus Bramble at home to Wigan today as Toon go for a third straight win.

But Boumsong will struggle to even make the bench after paying the price for a string of dodgy displays.

Roeder added: “He’s in a similar situation to Craig — he needs to be in the side to help ensure he goes to the World Cup.

“I’d have no problem bringing him back into the line-up but, long-term, it’s probably someone else’s decision whether he stays or goes.”

Wigan are eighth — two places above Newcastle — but Bramble has warned Paul Jewell’s side to beware the dangers of the second-season syndrome.

The Toon defender, 24, finished fifth with Ipswich in 2001 only to be relegated 12 months later.

He said: “They’ve sur-prised everyone but won’t be such an unknown quantity next time.”

Roeder plans a game behind closed doors next week to help confirm Michael Owen’s recovery from a broken foot.

The England striker hopes to feature in Toon’s two final games of the season against Birmingham and Chelsea.

Roeder said: “We’ll put on a game just to make sure he’s comfortable in an 11 versus 11 situation.”

LOL
If he makes the WC squad the French must be mental, and if he is really dreaming of the WC he had better find some form for us and fast!!

i think he's finished now. moore and bramble start today and then taylor is back soon so he really is fighting a losing battle.

I never thought Moore would ammount to anything but I am impressed with him, okay he lacks a bit of pace but so does Boum and with Titus back his pace makes up for it.
I think Boum will be lucky to return to our back four this season and if he does I do not think we will see a change in his form.

moore still hasnt won me over as yet, he's done ok but he hasnt really been tested enough as yet. if we have some luck with injuries (ie. only shola gets one from now, a bad one) then boum may have played his last game  bluecry.gif

Surely the less the french manager see's of him the better chance of him being in the WC squad!!!

Boumsong seems a very nice bloke. Just a crap defender, which should at normal teams mean a one-way ticket out of the club - not here it seems.
He isnt up to standard and has been given countless chances and flopped every time. He is Souness's fault. 8.5 million for him...Jesus wept. Rangers must be in hysterics. He'd be overpriced at 50p.
Nice bloke or no, he MUST be shown the door.

Boumsong must be sold, another huge loss  :(

Not sure why Boumsong should be worried, he's 1st choice for France so I can't see him being left out of the squad for missing the last 7 games of the season.

Him and Thuram have a great partnership with only 2 goals conceeded in qualifiers...

Should be:
1. Taylor
2. Moore
3. Ramage
4. Bramble
5. Boumsong

He's proven that's where he belongs, and it's good to know that in Roeder, we've got a manager who's not going to cave to his demands just because we paid £8.5m for him.

My heart bleeds... If he was so worried about playing in the World Cup then surely he wouldn't have dropped b0ll0ck after b0ll0ck for the last 6 (12?) months. Only has himself to blame for playing himself out of the French squad.  No sympathy whatsoever.

In only a few games, Moore, said by many to be shite, has looked 10 times the player Boumsong is.

We're a far better team without him, he terrfies the rest of our team when he gets the ball.

In the real world: Player sees manager to ask why he's not playing.

Something that must happen to a manager several times a week from players of all description.

In the world of fish and chip paper however: "Flop in showdown talks"

It's no wonder foreign players struggle at Newcastle...

Easy target.

BTW it's no coincidence that Boumsong has decided not to speak to the media....

Boumsong hasn't struggled though because the fans have unfairly targetted him, he's been got at for his own stupid mistakes.

given the way the french management seems to rate him, keeping out some pretty decent defenders, i think he's worth persevering with under a new manager(and coaching staff), despite what we've seen so far. either we're right and french football is run by loons, or our level of coaching and management since he's been here, and personal support to him, has been piss poor.

same with luque really. a new manager can work wonders sometimes.

Are you expecting us to believe that the media has turned us against him because he won't grant them interviews? :winking: He has made mistake after mistake since he signed. I don't need a poxy journo to tell me. He's (rightly) worried about his French place because he's played so poorly. Nowt to do with the media I'm afraid. :|

Did you see him against Chelsea? I know he's young and toon through and through but titus is a far better player when he's got a cool head next to him.

No, I'm saying these anti-Boumsong/shit stirring type of 'reports' are a direct result of Boumsong's refusal to now speak to the press.

So you're agreeing with me then? The media are churning these stories out because they have a lip-on! Have read this forum a lot and agree with a lot of what you say. I was merely being sarcastic. hence the  :winking:.  :winking:

I know what you mean HTT, IMO if Boumsong was from Newcastle, Some not all fans would be giving him more time and the local media would be sympathetic towards him, Ramage is a prime example

Boumsong could have been from Outer Mongolia or Killingworth and I'd still say he costs us goals and points. It has absolutely nothing to do with where he was born. He has been poor since he signed. FACT.

That bit aint true because he was decent when he first came here, All i was pointing out was if Boumsong was a Geordie he wouldnt get slated as much.

You sure about that? I'd beg to differ. I think he's been poor since he's signed to be honest. If you disagree then fair enough but i'm disappointed with our £8m central defender. Regular French international??? Don't think so :|

He was ok for half a dozen games a few months after he arrived. Overall, he has been poor.

And no amount of "he must be good he is in the French squad" bollox is going to change that. Especially as he apparently might not be in the french team after all, due to him not being good enough even for us.
