Alan Shearer Select XI vs. Celtic

By toontastic 10 May 2006

Thursday 11th May, 7.45pm kick off (live on ITV4)

The end of an era, as Alan Shearer makes his last appearance at St. James’ Park. Usually I resist sentimental temptation to cough up the money to go to these glorified kick-abouts, but I couldn’t ignore this one and duly paid the money which, unlike a certain greedy Irishman, is being given to charity.

It’s a shame that Shearer is injured for this though, we’d have all loved to see him line up with Sir Les and co. again but that’s just one of those things. He says he’ll kick the game off, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him take a penalty or something. The atmosphere should be great, albeit rather silly at times, but it’s a night we’ve all been looking forward to and should conclude what has been a great end to the season.

Alan Shearer’s Select XI – Confirmed so far are Les Ferdinand, Steve Watson, Gary Speed and Rob Lee. Whether the rest is simply our first team or if he’ll bring a few surprise faces we’re yet to be told. Hopefully Amdy Faye won’t go down in Shearer’s all time XI though! Michael Owen was expected to play but Sven has told him not to.

Celtic – We’ve been promised a full strength team as they did for Roy Keane on Tuesday night, but whether this remains is unknown. Roy Keane and Neil Lennon at a Shearer tribute match should be interesting though!

Lets give our all time record goal scorer a send off he deserves, enjoy the night.

The team has been confirmed as:
Goalkeepers: Shay Given, Steve Harper.

Defenders: Celestine Babayaro, Jean Alain Boumsong, Titus Bramble, Stephen Carr, Robbie Elliott, Peter Ramage, Steven Taylor.

Midfielders: Lee Clark, Emre, Amady Faye, Charles N'Zogbia, Matty Pattison.

Forwards: Shola Ameobi, Michael Chopra, Albert Luque.

Guest Players: Les Ferdinand, Rob Lee, Gary Speed, Steve Watson.
