Readers Letter: Sling Your Hook Graeme!

Newcastle-Online.com reader and long-time Newcastle fan Tom Watson writes in to us to let off some steam following Graeme Souness' Sky Sports News interview.
I don't usually write into websites, but I feel compelled to write in after reading the tragic Graeme Souness quotes on the home page when I got back home from work. I am absolutely livid and feel nothing but disgust by these comments I really do.

His whinging and moaning at such trivial issues as player ratings and this nonsense over Alan Oliver at the Chronicle, who happens to be doing his job Mr Souness, is absolutely pathetic from a man who I imagine is on a salary of over £1 million a year and so happens to be one of the luckiest men alive.

Not only does he have a dream job with dream wages, he has also been fortunate to have had the biggest war chest in the club's history. Forget Lee Clark's equaliser, or Gareth Barry's penalty miss, Souness fell on his feet when he took up the Newcastle job and has been showered with luck ever since. Luck mere mortals like us lot, who put our hands in our pockets to fund his failure, could only ever dream of.

How this idiot has hung on to his job for so long will go down as one of the biggest mysteries of the century, certainly on Tyneside.

GROW UP GRAEME and stop blaming everyone and everything for your own meandering failures, ineptness and inability to control everything.

This live interview with Sky Television, a station who have basked in our misfortune for years now, let me remind you, is no different to Craig Bellamy's live interview last year when he called the manager and Chairman a liar.

He was rightly ostracized for humiliating the name of Newcastle United and all those connected with the club live on TV and so should Souness be for once again making Newcastle United the copy for front page headlines and serving to create hysteria and gossip on the stands.

Once more we are the laughing stock of the English game. Our manager using his contacts in the media to bluff his way out of yet another disaster - the disaster being our season which goes from bad to worse.

As a season ticket holder of over 20 years and a supporter of some 30 plus years, never in my time as a supporter have we had such an ignorant, arrogant, deluded and churlish manager at the helm.

To blame injuries for our demise is nothing more than an excuse, one we've all heard before. I find it amazing that we can beat a full strength Arsenal side quite well in spite of numerous absentees due to injury, with the manager only too happy to take all the credit for that win, yet whenever we draw or lose or put in a poor performance (which is every week) he blames it on injuries.

If we can beat Arsenal with missing players, why can't we beat Boro? Villa? And what was the excuse for that Wigan farce where we had virtually a full team out?

Well I am not having it and neither should the Chairman who foolishly and against the will of most fans, appointed Souness, put him on a fantastic salary and handed him over £50 million pounds of OUR money to do MUCH BETTER THAN THIS.

And as for his comments stating he has done nothing wrong since he arrived. For starters he has cost Newcastle £4.5 million in lost revenue by taking a side that had finished 5th, all the way to 14th, losing £500,000 per every League place drop. And by failing to qualify for Europe, one could add many more millions to that figure.

Indeed if we fail to qualify this season, at what cost will this failure be measured against in future years?

Will Owen stay? Will Given and others? What effect will this have on purchasing players in forthcoming transfer windows? Without Europe, fans already bored stiff with the League program, could well decide to not renew their season tickets, if this is all we have to look forward to. So can we really afford then, to let this man do to us what he almost did to Liverpool and Blackburn, drag us down even further?

He must have a spell over the Chairman because Sir Bobby was sacked for finishing 5th and didn't get anything close to the backing Souness has had, despite doing a magnificent job, earning the club millions and putting pride back into the hearts of fans and players alike.

How much longer must we put up with this miserable, dour faced cretin who has the bare faced cheek to use the media to lie to fans who pay his wages. How dare he.

Souness needs a reality check and so does the Chairman because it will only get worse under this man. The seeds of failure were planted the day he was appointed. Time to reverse that decision.

Tom Watson, Prudhoe
