Over the past few days there has been a bit of misinformation flying around regarding suspensions. Time to set the record straight…
A player who is sent off in a match picks up an automatic suspension. The length of this suspension then varies depending on the offence committed, as follows:
*Dismissals for either Serious Foul Play, Violent Conduct or Spitting carry a 3-match ban.
*Dismissals for Offensive, Insulting or Abusive Language or Gestures carry a 2-match ban.
*Dismissals for Denying an Obvious Goalscoring Opportunity (either by physical means or by handling the ball), or for receiving 2 cautions in the same match carry a 1-match ban.
Additionally, if a player is sent off for the 2nd time in a season, an extra game will be added to his ban.
A player who accumulates a set number of cautions between the 1st day of the season and the final day of February of the same season will also be banned or sanctioned as follows:
*A player who receives 5 cautions in the period will receive a 1-match ban.
*A player who receives 10 cautions in the period will receive a 2-match ban.
*A player who receives 15 cautions in the period will receive a 3-match ban.
In each of the above instances the ban will commence 7 days after the 5/10/15th caution has been received
At Chelsea last night, Celestine Babayaro picked up his 5th caution of the season, and as a result will be suspended for the visit of the Champions in the Carling Cup next Wednesday.

Surely it is his 6th booking this season?

The one at Watford wasn’t his yellow, I think, it was a mistake. Correct me if I’m wrong.

Is Babayaro suspended for the Watford game?

Babaryaro’s card against Chelsea was his 5th of the season in domestic matches. Therefore by rule he misses out on Chelsea’s trip to SJP next wednesday for the Carling Cup. He will be available for the Watford game this weekend, because this type of suspension goes into effect a week after it occurs.
That is all…
