Back in 2002 we had missed out on French defender Sylvain Distin who decided to sign for Manchester City instead of joining Newcastle as they showed more "ambition" apparently. That prompted the then United manager Bobby Robson - who knew we needed to sign a centre-back and quick - to use his connections and sign a young lad, highly rated but known for his lapses in concentration, Titus Bramble.

And since his £4.5m move from Ipswich Town, Bramble has had many critics during his short time on Tyneside. From air kicks to just plain lack of concentration, some of the flack has been justified, and some hasn't.

There have been those who were willing to write the lad off completely and at the start of last season it's fair to say many would not have been too bothered to have seen the defender go and ply his trade somewhere else. His name on the team-sheet often drained confidence from out on the stands before a game, and you just knew there would be at least one heart in mouth moment during proceedings where Bramble was concerned

But in between those awful moments we have also seen some promising displays from the powerfully built centre-half. He has shown that he could be outstanding when fully focused and in Europe he has performed consistently well thus far which can't be taken away from him. Cause for optimism among those of us who still held faith in his ability while many chose to write him off.

Indeed Bramble has always had all the tools to be a very good defender but the one thing he really lacked was confidence and the self assurance that comes with it. But not now. From cries of "Oh no" to "Well Played", he is now a player who fans see as a loss to the team when out injured not a hindrance when playing and Bramble has obviously drawn great strength from the support of the crowd who to be fair, deserve credit too for allowing him to change opinions.

After an excellent latter part of the 2004-05 campaign, the tide is turning in favour of the man cruelly labeled "Shambles" in some quarters.

Its obvious alongside the quality of Boumsong that he has improved and the former Rangers man brings the best out of him no doubt, that allied to his new found self belief has meant a blossoming partnership started to develop.

But even before the Frenchman arrived, Titus was putting in consistent quality performances for the first time since signing, which have made a lot of fans question as I do myself, has he finally cracked it?

From January onwards he was a rock in the centre of defence and held our defence together at times. Injuries are still rearing their ugly head of course which is worrying but when fit Titus looks the player I sometimes struggled to believe he would ever be and it's great to see. Injury came at a bad time for him and United but I somehow suspect we'll see the same Bramble who won rave reviews when he does return.

Here’s hoping to a continuation of the form that has made Titus a plus to the first-team anyway because he's had it rough. Lets hope when he does get back he can continue that impressive partnership with Boumsong and lift the Toon back to where we should be... Europe.
