It's been a happy 24 hours for Newcastle United fans, those of us
that wanted Souness out that is. The Scot's tenure is over, resigned
to history, never to be repeated.
The last 18 months has been eventful, if anything, but the on-field
performances have been nothing short of catastrophic. The hole has
been dug, the question is.. can we get out of it?
On Saturday we host a Pompey side who are fighting for their lives.
They have a shrewd manager and they have recently strengthened their
squad, with a notable signing in Argentinean D'Allessandro.
We lie precariously only six points above the relegation zone. If
we don't get a result then we are in serious, serious trouble.
The Roeder/Shearer partnership will surely have a baptism of fire
on Saturday. St. James's will be rocking with a renewed optimism not
seen since the arrival of Bobby Robson.
One only hopes that the football seen in the Robson reign will return,
if not be bettered. But lets not kid ourselves, that is a long, long
way off. We are in a mess!
A mess caused by a manager who perhaps had our best interests at heart
but was possibly the worst tactical manager endured by Newcastle in
many a year.
At times he was clueless and not only did we suffer a dreadful string
of results, but the confidence of the players was lost too.
The only way the players can get any shred of confidence back is by
picking up wins and it is going to take time. Portsmouth are perhaps
one team you may have wanted to avoid but that's the way the cookie
crumbles. This is football and you only get out of football what you
deserve.
Did Newcastle United deserve Graeme Souness? Well one man thought
so, our chairman. If Freddy has anything about him he will hold his
hands up, admit he made a mistake and listen to US the fans and even
consult with us whether through the medium of the local press or whatever.
Appoint another duff manager and it will be your neck that the fans
will be calling for next time. Let us calm from our almost euphoric
state and be ready for the Pompey game. It's not going to be easy.
I wouldn't be surprised if Pompey come up and beat us. What we must
be prepared to do now is give Roeder and Shearer time to work and
grind results out. Hopefully come tea-time Saturday we will be three
more points towards safety but if we aren't then let us NOT be full
of gloom like we have been for the past few months.
It will take time and it's going to be hard. The future can only be
brighter, surely? The mess Souness and co has got us into is catastrophic,
but it is escapable. We just have to be patient. Back the lads, fully
back the guys who are in charge for now and let us together climb
this league and get to a Cup final.
We all care about this club, let's pack St. James and do our bit.
Let us help the players regain the confidence they have lost. Howay
the Lads. lets get the ball rolling. Our season starts now!
