By Howaythetoon Let us never ever forget
Hughie Gallacher is his name. Scorer of 143 goals in 174 games, Captain of the 1927 League Championship side - the last player in Black & White to lift the trophy and legend of Tyneside. A remarkable footballer, a remarkable man. His story, as told in a wonderful documentary titled 'Looking for a legend' which was shown on ITV last night, was a stunning reminder to generations brought up on heroes such as Wor Jackie, Supermac, Kevin Keegan, Andy Cole, Peter Beardsley and Alan Shearer, that we must never forget the original hero. A player who in his 5 years at the club, become the king of Tyneside. Loved and adored by men, women and bairns alike, the Scot had become an adopted Geordie. The highest honour for any 'foreigner' or indeed any none Geordie footballer. Before Wee Hughie there had been big name centre-forwards and star players of course; Jock Peddie, Bill Appleyard, Albert Shepherd and Neil Harris, scorer of an FA Cup winning goal and Hughie's predecessor in the shirt, but Gallacher set the standard for the likes of Milburn and Shearer. His exploits in the shirt and his success on the field stand out, and above all others. With the greatest of goals to games ratio of any United marksman before or since and having Skippered Newcastle to their last ever League Title, Gallacher perhaps deserves to be ranked as numero uno. And it's nigh time Newcastle United and the City of Newcastle recognised the man and honoured him in a manner befitting his name, legend and achievements. Wor Jackie, a great player and a greater man quite rightly has a statue and of course a whole stand named after him. Shearer has been honoured with the dubious distinction of having a bar named after him. But where is Wee Hughie's statue? Where is he honoured? The history books? Sorry but that isn't fitting enough for such a great institution of this great club. Freddy Shepherd, on last night's programme, said Gallacher has been an asset to Newcastle for over 80 years. Indeed he has. As a United supporter, Gallacher is a big hero of mine. I haven't seen him play but to me his name, what he did in a Black & White shirt and what he meant to the people of Newcastle, make him a very special part of the club's history. Lets not lock his name away under key and refer to Gallacher from stats peering out of a history book. Lets show him off and let a whole new generation know exactly how special he was and how much he means to the club, City and people. He took his own life yet gave so much of it back. And we must never ever forget the wee Scots lad, the best centre-forward Newcastle ever had. © Howaythetoon Notes: We read all e-mails but cannot promise that we will respond, however all e-mails sent in regarding NUFC related issues, get published on our pages. |
