George Best may not have been everyone's cup of tea off the field, but for every football fan around the globe his ability on the pitch will forever remain etched in history. I'm a Newcastle United fan and although Best had no links to the Toon, he is footballing hero of mine and this is my own little tribute to the man.

People are too quick to throw the word legend at players these days but George best was simply that, he really was. I wasn’t even a bubble when Best was playing the game that I love with the style and skill I can only pray to see at a live match these days. I know because I was brought up in the Northwest surrounded by Manchester United fans, so I'm fully aware of the legend that is George Best.

In the same way the Wor Jackie Milburn stands as Tyneside's favourite son, George Best is the same back in his homeland of Northern Ireland. Yet Best was something more than a local hero, his status was elevated to that of a global superstar and although I personally believe that Maradona is the greatest ever player to have played the game, George Best pushes him a close second, for me.

When you mention Maradona and Pelé you have to mention George Best and this is testament for a man who ‘retired’ at the age of 27!

This weekend the Magpie faithful will join other fans from around the country in partaking in a minutes silence as a sign of respect for George Best. I honestly hope that every single fan in this country respects it totally.

You think football is boring now? Without a player like George Best, players wouldn’t know what entertainment was! If we owe him anything we owe him that. Forget the Man Utd links, forget his personal life or the headlines he created off the pitch... Christ we have all made mistakes and who in the hell wouldn’t have lived his lifestyle if you had just half the chance?

I bet he doesn’t regret it for a second and why should he? He has probably done more in his life than most will ever do, so ignore the newspaper and paparrazi crap that gets pumped down our necks and look upon this man for what he was... a truly great footballer.

Football is the game we all love and yesterday we lost one of our greatest players ever. So if your're lucky enough to be heading to Goodison Park this weekend, or even if you're in a pub, or watching the match at home on your TV, join in the minute silence and show your respect.

For football has lost one of it's best ever and if we can't celebrate the genius that was Best, who can we celebrate? Rest in peace George and may there be a leather ball for you to kick around up there.
