Toon Player Ratings Guide

At Newcatle-Online.com we like to be fair with the players and our assessment of their individual performances so we have devised a ratings system which we work off to award our marks to the players.

Ratings Guide

10 = world-class
For a player to achieve a rating of 10, the individual performance has to be of world-class proportions. It is very rare for a player to be awarded such a high mark but every now and again some performances will merit a ten. Perhaps the individual will score a hat-trick or turn a game destined to be lost on it's head all by himself. Those type of super-human efforts will warrant such a high marking. For example, Alan Shearer's 5 goals in the 8-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday back in 1999 would justify a 10 rating. Or Jonathan Woodgate's performance in the 0-0 home draw with Marseille back in 2004.

9 = top-class
Top-class is a notch down from world-class and for a player to achieve such a rating they would have to perform to the best of their ability and contribute something extra special in a game. For example, Scott Parker's performance away to Arsenal this season warrants a rating of nine because he didn't put a foot wrong and despite having made just one full start in a year prior to that game, his work rate and commitment was, well, top-class.

8 = excellent
Excellent is the type of rating that is awarded to performances that although excellent, will have been tinged with one or two mistakes which take something away from the overall performance of a player's game. For example, Steven Taylor's performance at home to Manchester United this season. He had an excellent game overall, but he was at fault in some way for their opening goal which kind of detracts from what would have otherwise be a top-class performance.

7 = very good
Very good is the type of rating that is awarded to a performance that while, nothing spectacular, is above the level of average. Solid, a job well done type of rating.

6 = average
Average is the type of rating that is awarded to a performance that is neither good enough nor shocking enough - it's an in between type of mark for performances of a mixed bag.

5 = poor
Poor is the type of rating that is awarded to a performance that simply isn't good enough at this level where the player in question has put in a bad shift. Maybe a performance littered with mistakes or a performance littered with poor passing, gilt edged missed chances and so on.

4 & under = shocking
Shocking is the type of rating awarded to an awful 'get him off' type of performance where the player has not only under performed or made mistakes of a costly nature but also lacked heart and commitment to the cause.

Substitute Ratings

6 & above = very good
5 = involved, decent
4 & under = made no impact, little time on the pitch
