Toon Player Ratings Vs Manchester City (a)
|
Match
Date: 1 February 2006

An in depth look at each individual performance from Newcastle's 3-0
defeat away to Manchester City in the Premiership, rating the players,
the manager, Toon fans and the referee.
Players

Shay Given - 6 |
Not the best game he's ever had, but he made two brilliant saves.
The constant noise from the away fans of "There's only one Shay Given"
shows that the fans realise just how important this man is to our
football club. Faultless for the first goal in my opinion, few keepers
would have saved it. The second goal was due to sloppy defending,
but i'm sure Shay will be disappointed to let in such a weak header.
The third goal he had a slight rush of blood, steaming out to Vassell
when maybe he should have held back a bit. But we'll let him off,
as he's been immense this season, as always.
Peter Ramage - 6 |
I actually feel sorry for this lad. He's young, enthusiastic and has
come into the team and looked bright, provided some decent crosses
last night and bombed up the wing well. Linked up well with Nobby
when he came on and looked promising. A definite plus point from the
match.
Jean-Alain Boumsong - 3 |
Awful performance yet again from "Boum". Always out of position, didn't
win tackle's or header's and looked about as out of place as Marcelino
at a World Player of the Year Award ceremony. Terribly outpaced by
Vassell for the third goal. This man is becoming an embarrassment
on the pitch
Titus Bramble - 5 |
Bramble started off very brightly and made a few telling tackles early
on. However, a rush of blood brought and awful tackle and a deserved
yellow card. From this point onwards it was usual Bramble, slow on
the ball, looking confused and as if he didn't belong on the pitch.
Also had to cover right back an awful lot as Ramage had a whole side
of the pitch to cover by himself.
Celestine Babayaro - 4 |
Did absolutely nothing for the entire match going forward. No movement,
no pace down the wings, no creativity, sloppy defensive play and often
caught out of position, leaving the attack minded N'Zogbia having
to track back. Poor game from a poor player.
Emre - 7 (my man of the match) |
Best Toon player on the pitch by an absolute country mile. Always
looking to take the ball off the defence, to stop the long ball rubbish,
and looking to link up with his fellow midfielders and strikers. Some
of his ball control is sublime, and he makes us look like a different
team when he's on form. However, like Owen, everytime he goes down
for a tackle you think to yourself "This is him out for another three
months". An injury free Emre would be a massive plus for the season
Scott Parker - 5 |
Same as Clarky really, tried his best to get us possession. However,
it was quite clear he still isn't 100% match fit. This man is going
to be a Newcastle United legend, and once fully fit I am sure that
the pre injury Parker will return. Not his best match.
Lee Clark - 5 |
Same old Clarky, always giving 110% to the NUFC cause, fought every
tackle, tried to create, but at the end of the day, we are Newcastle
United, one of the biggest clubs in the world and we started our youth
team coach in central midfield. Thought he did as well as he could,
with the impossible job he was given.
Charles N'Zogbia |
Wasn't given a chance really, had to spend all his time tracking back
to cover the clueless Babayaro. He is an excellent prospect, but too
often he is being forced to go in the wrong direction on the pitch.
A much needed outlet of pace in the team.
Alan Shearer - 3 |
Probably his most disappointing game yet. Not a shot on goal, not
a single one. Didn't look like getting one either. It's a shame that
this great man and great player is ending a magnificent career in
this way. Only positive is that he got behind the city backline once,
but didn't have the pace to stay in front of them. A once great player,
it's such a shame it's ending this way.
Michael Chopra - 3 |
It's obvious this lad isn't up to the premiership, which is a shame
as I for one had very high hopes for him. He's as weak as they come,
doesn't jump for headers at all and just expects the ball to find
him, and when it doesn't, he runs around like a headless chicken.
I know it's harsh on him in this team, but it's a true reflection
on an average player.

Luque 6: A few nice touches. Backheels and flicks
are all well and good when you are 3-0 up, but we were 3-0 down and
needed proper football. Linked up well with Nobby and Emre, there
is certainly promise there. Give him time (more than a few weeks)
and we will see him shine.
Nobby 6: Made us look much better when he came on,
he gave us a good outlet on the right wing with some neat touches.
Was told to cut in far too often. With our lack of pace we needed
crosses into the danger area, something we know he can provide. We
need to be playing to our strengths, and we all know what Solano's
is.
O'Brien n/a: Not enough time o judge him really.
This lad has to be given a chance and he certainly looks full of running.
But if he was that much of a prospect sure he would have got a game
before he was 21. If he couldn't get a game for Carlisle, should he
really be getting one for us?

We didn't have one in the stadium.
