News: Toon Out To End Hamstring JinxAn interesting story from the Sunday Sun: In a bid to protect their stars from picking up injuries, and knowing Michael Owen has been the victim of hamstring strains in the past. United's squad have asked the club to modify the playing surfaces at the state-of-the-art centre in Benton to combat the threat of injury. Amid a plague of hamstring problems in recent weeks, new boys Emre and Craig Moore have been sidelined along with Kieron Dyer. Dyer and Emre were both crocked again in the first half of their comeback against Manchester United last Sunday, along with Lee Bowyer, who has a muscle strain. And manager Graeme Souness - while insisting Dyer will overcome his difficulties - last night admitted action has been taken to minimise the risk of further casualties. "We have had some of the fibre taken out of our pitches at the training ground," revealed Souness. "The players were complaining they were too firm." He added: "There are large doubts over Dyer and Emre for the Fulham game next Saturday. We will wait and see, but we can't afford to rush them back." However, the Newcastle boss added: "Of course I'm concerned about Kieron's fitness. "But Ryan Giggs had the same problems and so too Michael Owen - and they sorted themselves out." News: Is That A Promise, Freddy?
"If we win anything, I shall retire immediately - and people may be praying that happens! "It would be up to the board to decide who was the next chairman, not me. But it would be a lovely problem for them. "If you asked me whether we'd have a trophy in the cabinet by the end of the season I would say: 'I hope so - I think so.'" "It has to be a top-six finish and a trophy - why not? We came close enough by getting to a semi-final and a quarter-final last season, which most clubs would have killed for. "Yes, we've got a point less in the league than this time last year when Bobby Robson was here, but we always seem to have a bad start and we've recovered before. "Every manager in the Premier League is judged by results. Graeme Souness is no different from Arsene Wenger, Alex Ferguson or Mick McCarthy. "But I have every faith in Graeme to succeed. You don't spend a club-record fee on a player on behalf of a manager you don't believe in. "This isn't a time to speculate on what is or isn't going to happen to the manager, but talk of him having six games to save his job is absolute rubbish. "Graeme is a straightforward guy. He doesn't hide. Maybe it's to his detriment - he's too straightforward sometimes when a bit of diplomacy is needed. "But then look how diplomatic I am in press conferences! We've got plenty in common." "It really is the best squad we've ever had. "Every manager and chairman I've spoken to recognises what good players we've signed. Once we turn the corner this season, we'll be away." NUFC Fans Gallery: Michael Owen Transfer/Parade Photos
