News: Clark To Get A New Deal?

The Sunday Sun are reporting that Toon midfielder Lee Clark could be in line for a contract extension. Clarkie initially signed on a 3 month deal but Souness is looking to extend that, saying:

"My intention is to have a word with the chairman and extend Lee's contract until the end of this season."

Premiership: NUFC 1-0 Manchester City

An 18th minute Michael Owen goal was enough to give Newcastle our second win in a week to make it six points from six with a well deserved 1-0 win over Stuart Pearce's Manchester City side at St. James' Park yesterday afternoon.

Souness brought in Parker and Bramble for Faye and Taylor respectively otherwise it was an unchanged side from the one that beat Blackburn 3-0.

Unlike that game however, Newcastle started much better and dominated the first half for large spells with good possession, good attacking play and restricting Man City to a few chances, one of them drawing a brilliant save from Shay's legs following a City free-kick.

With Parker and Clark playing deep as the two defensive middfielders this gave N'Zogbia and Bowyer freedom to get forward to support Owen and Shearer and it was Bowyer who played in the England striker for his first ever goal in Newcastle colors at St. James' Park, beating James when one on one with a neat finish.

And Owen could have had 3 or 4 more goals as his pace, positional sense and movement caused City problems all game, but he spurned two one-on-ones and hit the crossbar with another from an acute angle.

After the break City came at us having been largely quiet in the first half and while the men in blue had lots of possession they rarely troubled Given with United's defence performing well throughout.

It wasn't a classic but there was plenty of promising signs, most notably Bramble's performance, N'Zogbia's wing play, Clark's passing, Owen's movement and Parker as ever, impressive.

So our first win of the season at the Old Gallowgate then. With returning bodies expected to come back, next week's trip to Portsmouth will give Souness a few selection headaches but his side done themselves proud once more and things are looking up dare I say it.

Well done Graeme and the lads, lets keep it going.
