Opposition Guide: Blackburn Rovers Squad ReviewNewcastle-Online.com don our scouting caps to file a report on Blackburn's squad ahead of Sunday's match at Ewood Park. Here we take a look at their key players who could feature in one way or another and assess their strengths and weaknesses. [Read More +] Gerrin ZoltanAn injury-time goal from Zoltan Gera earned West Bromwich Albion a point at the Stadium of Light this afternoon and in doing so kept Newcastle United off the bottom of the Premiership. Sunderland had been leading from a 7th minute Gary Breen header but the Midlanders broke Wearside hearts and captured Tyneside's with their late, late equaliser. The unwashed would have went above the Toon of course had they clung on for the win, meaning we would have propped up the table going into tomorrow's match against Blackburn. In other matches, Nicky Butt got sent off for Birmingham in a 1-1 draw against Portsmouth, with Laurent Robert setting up another ex-Mag Lua Lua, while James Milner scored on his home debut for Aston Villa who lead Spurs, but Robbie Keane grabbed an equaliser and that's how the scores remained. Today's Premiership results: Aston Villa 1-1 Tottenham Charlton 0-2 Chelsea Fulham 1-2 West Ham Portsmouth 1-1 Birmingham SMB 1-1 West Brom 8 Years Ago Today...Newcastle United, making our Champions League bow, thumped the mighty Barcelona 3-2 with a Tino Asprilla hat-trick making it one of, if not thee, best night in our history. Barcelona come to St. James' Park with a squad brimming with world-class names such as Nadal, Figo, Enrique and Rivaldo but the Catalan giants found themselves 3-0 down after 45 minutes due to the Tino and Gillespie super show. In a first half of exhilarating football we tore the La Liga side to shreds and with every wave of Black & White sweeps forward we looked like we were going to score. The noise and passion inside St. James's that night hasn't been matched since. The whole stadium was rocking with none stop 90 minute chanting and singing and it didn't stop there as Tyneside partied on into the small hours long after the final whistle went. Barca come back into the game in the second half, pulling back two goals through Enrique and Figo, but Kenny Dalglish's men hung on for our first ever win in the Champions League on a night never to forget. United: Given, Watson, Beresford, Barton, Albert, Batty, Gillespie, Lee, Asprilla, Tomasson (Peacock), Barnes (Ketsbaia). Barcelona: Hesp, Reiziger, Celades, Nadal, Sergi, De la Pena, Figo, Luis Enrique, Amunike (Ciric), Anderson (Dugarry), Rivaldo. Attendance: 35,274 |
