Comment: Give This Lad A Go Graeme

If Owen does fail to make it for the Derby game then we could do a lot worse than throwing in Michael Chopra who lets face it, can do no worse than Shola Ameobi has done for, oh, the past 12 months or more?

Unlike Ameobi however, Chopra hasn't really been given a chance in one form or another to prove conclusively that he can or can not do a job when called upon. So give him a try Graeme!

You have nothing to lose. If it works, it will go down as an inspired selection, and you become a tactical genius. And if it doesn't, well, you have your 20 goal a season man who will be in Germany next Summer to call on.

Shola and Shearer as a partnership is the footballing equivalent of Kiki Dee and Elton John duetting - scary.

Chopra, a Geordie, will bring with him some spark, fizz and determination which Big Al needs alongside him.

Make his day and maybe with it ours too if Owen doesn't make it.

Mackem Mickey Taking?

Various reports this afternoon are claiming that Michael Owen could be a doubt for Sunday's match against the dark side, indeed Graeme Souness told the club's official website that the No.10 is a concern having felt a pull on his hamstring in training yesterday.

But the Scot still hope's he will be fit for the Derby, and if not? Well he can always turn to England centre-forward and 20-goal a season man Shola Ameobi.

*Gulp*

In other Toon news Craig Moore suffered an injury set-back in the reserves' 2-0 defeat away to Birmingham City last night. Thankfully the club signed the Australian international on a pay as you play deal.

Actually, that's a lie.

But his injury is good news for those underused medical staff of ours so at least someone is benefiting.

Revista De La Liga Albert Luque Interview

Last night's edition of Sky Sports' Spanish football show 'Revista De La Liga' carried an interesting interview with the Toon's Albert Luque. And in case any of you missed it, here is the gist of it:

He wants to help Newcastle "grow" as a team and would like to play in the Champions League next season. He says we are a "very important" team in England.

He wants to win the FA Cup as he knows how "badly the fans want it".

He said Spain admire Alan Shearer a lot and after the final whistle went at St. James' Park following Deportivo's 2-1 win in the InterToto Cup, he went up to Shearer and asked him for his shirt - with the No.9 dully obliging. Cue big cheesy grin from Luque.

He also said he has learnt a lot from Shearer already and how helpful the Skipper has been with advice and tips.

Luque believes he is a centre-forward but explained that Souness' plans were to play him, Owen and Shearer in a forward three with Luque wide left of that three-pronged-attack.

He says he rarely keeps up to date with La Liga now as he spends all his time watching Premiership matches and tapes of defenders so he can "learn" their game to "improve" his own.

He could have joined Barcelona last season but Deportivo's President played hard ball. He also said his move to Newcastle wasn't easy because of the President.

Watching, Luque gave off the impression that he didn't like Augusto Cesar Lendoiro.

Luque also revealed how Michael Robinson, a Spanish broadcaster, told him all about Newcastle as a City and the support we show for the club as well as hailing the signing of Owen.

Guillem Balague, co-presenting the show and a well known reporter both in Spain and now the UK revealed that Luque was very aware of Marcelino's time here and how Luque, aware of how the fans felt about him, wanted to impress the United faithful and adjust quickly.

Balague, not long after the slot, also revealed how Real Sociedad who face massive financial problems, are "desperate to offload two of their stars to a far Northern based Premiership side" - Turkish striker Nihat being one of them.

Read into that what you will...

All in all it was a canny interview with Luque and he seems happy and chomping at the bit to get his Newcastle career going.
