Latest From The 'Stand Up - Sit Down' Campaign

Ask a football supporter why they dedicate no small part of their lives and income to following their team and you’ll get obvious answers; however one response seldom given these days refers to the camaraderie with fellow supporters, the singing and chanting, the banter and standing shoulder to shoulder with mates and family on the terraces.

NUFC Womens Reserves: Newcastle 6-2 Blackburn Rovers

Super striker Stacey steals the show

A superb hat-trick from Newcastle striker Stacey Simpson helped the reserves to a 6-2 demolition of their counterparts from Lancashire. Her inspired display capped a superb all-round performance from the NUWFC reserves in the mainly one-sided affair at Bullocksteads Sport Centre.

However, despite early Newcastle pressure it was Blackburn who took the lead. The Rovers winger cut inside from the right and dribbled into the Newcastle box. As she tricked her way past the Newcastle defenders she was clipped, resulting in Blackburn having the chance to take the lead from the spot.

The Blackburn striker coolly slotted past Newcastle keeper Charlotte Furno. It was the worst thing that Blackburn could have done. Newcastle woke up and turned the heat on the Rovers defence.

It was time for Stacey Simpson to take centre stage as she ran into the box and produced a fine finish to equalise. Newcastle quickly sprang forward once more and took the lead when striker Sarah Coleman popped up at the back post to smash United in front following a fine cross from the left. Two goals in two minutes!

Newcastle were moving up the gears. Not content with taking the lead United looked to capitalise on the Blackburn defence again, which was now capitulating. Wave after wave of attack lead to Newcastle adding a third.

Following a succession of corners, Captain Kerry Davison pounced to poke the ball in from close range to give United a 3-1 half-time lead.

It was Newcastle striker Stacey Simpson who lit up the second half with two superbly taken goals and an assist. Her first came almost instantly from the re-start as she lobbed the ball over the defender, ran onto it, carried it into the box before coolly slotting the ball past the oncoming Rovers keeper.

Newcastle then made some substitutions and on came Vicky Mudd who made an immediate impact up front with a superb shot on the turn that went just wide. Then she almost scored again after pouncing on a lose ball where she was unlucky to see her determination go unrewarded as the ball trickled just past the post.

However, Simpson wasn’t to be denied her hat-trick as she latched onto a ball, cut inside and fired past the Rovers keeper with another terrific finish.

To Rovers credit they responded almost immediately. An attack down the right wing and a lobbed shot was floated in. Charlotte Furno was deceived by the flight of the ball and it ended up in the back of United’s net.

As Blackburn pressed to salvage some shred of a respectable score line Newcastle sprang on the counter attack. A superb ball into the box from the left landed at the feet of Simpson, she kept her cool, and brilliantly laid the ball back for second half-substitute Haley English to smash in United’s sixth and final goal.

All in all a terrific display from the Newcastle United Women's Reserves. I have to mention the Newcastle backline who played terrifically, along with the very impressive Laura Jobson who controlled the game with an assured performance in the middle of the pitch.

But the day belonged to striker Stacy Simpson who is my Woman of the Match. Head Coach Rob Atkin had this to say following the result:

"The reserves is all about playing well to get into the first team, and that said, this was a good footballing performance from the girls. That is all we can ask for."

News: Carr Retires From International Football

Newcastle's Irish full-back Stephen Carr has quit international football at the age of 29. The Republic of course failed to qualify for the 2006 World Cup in Germany and Carr's shock decision, who won 41 caps for his country, will be a big blow for Ireland.

Carr, speaking to Nufc.co.uk said:

"I have made my decision, and there is no going back for me now.

"I just feel the time is right to call it a day with Ireland.

"I think it's time for me to stand aside now, and let some of the younger lads coming through have the opportunity to play for Ireland.
