Subject: This bloke...

Dear Freddy,

Should history repeat itself in a certain game coming up, the fella above is currently out of a job and is looking to get back into football, citing a desire to manage a Premiership club.

His qualifications aren't the greatest, no SPL Titles, just that plastic European Cup thingy, a few German Leagues and various domestic Cups. But he wouldn't cost a penny in compensation and you never know...

Just a thought, anyway.

Thanks.

PS Have you lost weight recently? You're looking very well. Keep up the good work.

Result: Wigan 1-0 NUFC

Newcastle's mini run of form came to a bitter end this lunchtime, losing 1-0 to Wigan Athletic at the JJB Stadium in a frustrating game.

Jason Roberts scored the only goal of the match on 40 minutes, a neat move finished off by the striker with the ball squeezing through Shay's legs and into the back of the net from an acute angle.

Incredibly Souness started Faye alongside Parker in midfield with Elliott coming in for the injured Babayaro at left-back and Owen returning up front alongside Shearer.

And it was clear from the off that we had set our stall out to pick up a point with two defensive players in the centre and plenty of sideways and backwards passing while playing deep defensively as a whole.

The home side however played with no such caution and set out to win, getting at United with neat football and powerful running from their front men.

And it was that combination that saw Roberts hit the post early on, after a Boumsong header towards his own goal caused panic in the Toon rear-guard.

At the other end Newcastle continued to waste possession and huff and puff, aiming plenty of long balls up to Shearer - a feature of the 90 minutes.

Bowyer did strike the foot of the post from a scuffed shot but other than that we registered little goalmouth action in the first-half and to make matters worse, the former Leeds man had to go off injured with what looked like a knee injury.

The quite frankly pathetic Ameobi replacing him on the right. We may as well have just kept him on the bench and played with 10 men for what he gave us, or what he didn't to be more accurate... shocking performance, beaten all his other woeful ones by some distance.

Souness brought on Emre at the interval and the little Turk settled in straight away and gave us more balance and creativity in the centre, with our lot enjoying large portions of possession.

But for all our keep-ball we did very very little with it, Filan in goal not having to make one save all game.

We did get the ball in the back of the net, but the linesman ruled it hadn't crossed the line when Shearer's header clearly had done.

But in truth we didn't deserve an equaliser and even when Wigan went down to ten men late on, McCulloch given a straight red for a crude challenge on Emre, the pressure we exerted was fairly tame.

So an all-round pathetic performance then with only one or two able to hold their heads up high. Next week's match with them lot down the road already has an air of deja-vu about it.

We must improve in every aspect Graeme, you've played all your trump cards, the excuses don't wash anymore and those that still cling to some blind hope that you can lead us to a European qualifying slot, are fast running out of patience.

We expect better, even given our injury woes, especially considering the vast majority of Wigan's side were playing Championship football last term.

We were not unlucky, tired or beaten by a better team, we beat ourselves by simply not playing anything resembling football, by not communicating with one another and by being tactically inept.

Hopeless!
