Opinion: Entertaining The Idea Of Football Graeme

There has been an awful lot wrong with the standard of football played by Newcastle United for an awful long time now. As a team we seem incapable of even doing the basics to an acceptable level and we are quite simply inadequate in some of the most mundane aspects of the game.

NUFC Womens Football: NUFCW 0-1 Liverpool WFC

Welcome to the first Newcastle United Women’s Football Club match report on Newcastle-Online.com - a report by Gaz Pearson

Newcastle United Women’s football club were involved in a terrific encounter against their counterparts from Liverpool on Sunday. The nail-biting match between NUWFC and the strong – albeit recently relegated – Liverpool Women’s team proved to be a fascinating game with the away team snatching all three points late on in the proceedings.

However, in the first half it was Newcastle who went the closest as Kelly Ridley provided a cross and with Ruth Sutcliffe closing in on the ball at the far post it was terrific closing by the Liverpool keeper that prevented the home side taking the lead.

The first half drew to a close with both teams level. The two midfields were giving an excellent account of themselves with some superbly timed tackles epitomising both sides commitment.

In the second half the match became more open. Newcastle debutant keeper Charlotte Furno pulled off some excellent saves to keep her side in the game. Her heroics in net almost proved crucial when on the 70-minute mark Newcastle striker Michaela Newton lost her marker and hit a superb drive that had the Liverpool keeper well beaten…only for the ball to come back off the foot of the post.

This miss was to prove costly. Liverpool substitute Shelley James timed her run to perfection as she glided past the Newcastle back-four and chipped the advancing Furno (75 mins).

Despite late Newcastle pressure this proved to be the winning goal. Newcastle United Women’s team head coach Rob Atkin had this to say about the game:

"The players have put in an excellent performance against one of the top teams in this division, they are well aware that this is the level of commitment we need to show every week if we are to become an established club at this level.

"We have a very young team and they must not let the result knock their confidence because we were very good throughout the game and Liverpool know they have been tested.”

Report: Taylor Made For England

Newcastle's Steven Taylor capped off an immense performance last night for the England Under-21s with two superb goals as Peter Taylor's men beat Poland 4-1 at Hillsborough.

Taylor played in the centre of defence and was the pick of the bunch from an impressive England performance where all eleven players played their part in a fantastic match.

(Take note England seniors)

Taylor was heavily involved in his first goal, intercepting a ball deep in his own half the 19 year-old ran at the Polish defence before playing it out wide to Aaron Lennon who drove a low cross into the box for Carlton Cole who back heeled it to Taylor, with the ball bobbling off his knee and into the empty net.

If his first goal was that of a goalscoring midfielder, his second was very much a centre-forward's goal. A right-wing free-kick was flung it which Taylor smashed home after losing his marker before peeling away arm aloft ala Alan Shearer.

He could have had a hat-trick and not only was his attacking play significant, so was his defending, marshaling the back-four superbly and leading the defence, often urging his fellow men to push up or to knock the ball about a bit to frustrate the Polish attack.

Carlton Cole and Jerome Thomas scored the other goals and James Milner, dropped for the match, came on in the second half and looked lively.

Now for a goal in the Black & White Steven...
