Friendly Result: NUFC 5-0 YeadingHoway 5-0 After 75 minutes of this match, most of the crowd were probably wishing they were at home watching the Ashes. Then, in a quick 15 minute burst, United fired in 4 goals to add to debutant Craig Moore's 1st half opener. Graeme Souness made 6 changes from the InterToto Cup defeat to Deportivo on Wednesday night. Steve Harper came in for Shay Given, Shola Ameobi replaced captain Alan Shearer, Jermaine Jenas and Kieron Dyer came in for James Milner and Amdy Faye. Italian trialist Francesco Coco made his debut at left-back replacing Robbie Elliott, and Craig Moore made his debut at the expense of Steven Taylor. Jean-Alain Boumsong was made Skipper in Big Al's absence. Newcastle side started off brightly, with Dyer bursting into the Yeading penalty area within 20 seconds, but not being allowed to get a shot in. The debutants had made a slightly shaky start, with Moore sticking a wayward pass straight into the Yeading dugout, but they both soon settled down. Emre on the other hand carried on where he left off from Wednesday, putting a shot wide in the 2nd minute, and forcing a comfortable save from Preddie in the 9th. A nice move involving Boumsong and Bowyer saw Ameobi trouble the inside of the post, while at the other end Protain headed wide, and early sub Stanley miscontrolled when in on goal. Not a lot happened for the next half an hour, and the discontent in the crowd was growing. There was even a very small amount of booing in the direction of Jenas, who responded with a shot narrowly over 5 minutes before the interval. Yeading then conceded a needless corner, which Emre planted onto the head of Moore, and the ball found the net. A nice way for the big Aussie to start his Toon career. Ameobi then had a couple of efforts on goal before the half ended, and Boumsong left the field not to return after the break, replaced by Steven Taylor, while James Milner came on for the industrious Scott Parker. United again started brightly after the break, with Bowyer and Dyer linking up beautifully to force a corner, from which Emre shot wide via a deflection. Ameobi had another weak effort on goal, and then the 6,151 crowd were shocked by a Yeading equaliser! However, Morgan’s goal was ruled out for offside, despite certain members of the crowd not realising the flag was aloft. Another chance followed when Ameobi gave possession away in the Yeading half, and Bernard ran all the way through the Newcastle defence (a la Andrade) to shoot narrowly past the post. The Toon responded well to these scares, with Dyer heading just over before getting away down the right to set up the lively Milner to slot the ball beyond the substitute goalkeeper Blackmore. United were now completely dominant and, with Yeading significantly tiring, Milner shot narrowly over before Emre got the goal his hard work deserved, with a lovely dink over Blackmore, making it 3-0. Substitute goalkeeper Tony Caig had very little to deal with after he came on, only a header just over in the 87th minute remotely troubling him. At the other end, Ameobi was still showing signs of lack of confidence and fitness (lest we forget this is his 1st full game back from his summer operation), and was booed by a very small number of fans after losing possession again in the 86th minute. 5 minutes later a belter from the Nigerian Geordie from the edge of the area made it 4-0, and 90 seconds later he rounded off a 5-0 win for United with a simple finish past Blackwell. So a solid start for new boys Moore and Coco, although both still look short of fitness. Another exciting display from Emre, capped with a fine goal, and a pair of goals which will do Ameobi’s confidence the power of good, although he will have to improve a lot on this display if he wants to justify a 1st team place week in week out. Nothing to be too concerned about, it's not like it was our 1st team. Given and Shearer were missing... |
