A Word On Jermaine Jenas...

Two assists at the weekend capped off an alround impressive display from Jermaine Jenas to give him a reasonable start to the new campaign where much more is expected of him. We all know he has the ability and in Souness he may have the right man to turn all that potential into an end product and of late we are seeing encouraging glimpses. Up against 1st Division folly is all good and well however. Up against the Keane's, Lampard's, Gerrard's and Vieira's of this world is where it counts and where we will need his talent to blossom most.

The big remaining criticism of Jenas is that he is too soft, often bullied or eased out of possession. Apparently he's a quiet lad and wouldn't say boo to a goose in the dressing room. He needs a nasty streak to compliment that undoubted potential of his. Instead of helping up a player after challenging him, JJ needs to leave his man crumpled on the deck. Instead of smiling at the opposition and joking with them he needs to snarl at them, to intimidate them.

He needs that streak that Souness was famed for as a player and as Dwight Yorke would say, now as a manager. Souness should sit him down to watch a few tapes of himself in his pomp. I look at Jenas and see an awful lot of potential and ability, but football is a tough game where it gets even tougher at the top. If our No.7 wants to become a top player he needs to toughen up.

A Great Way To Spend £2m

Manchester United PLC today revealed that Newcastle paid them £2m for Nicky Butt. 7 games into his Toon career and that small fee is already looking a huge bargain. Just to put the fee into perspective, former Sunderland midfielder Gavin Mccann cost Aston Villa £2.5m.
