Who Needs Champions League Football...

From today's Chronicle:

Newcastle United today reported yearly profits of £8.3m - despite losing out on lucrative TV cash after failing to qualify for the Champions League. Profits are down £3.3m on the previous year, reflecting the club being knocked out of the top European competition by Partizan Belgrade on penalties at St James' Park in the qualifying stages.

But a good show in the Uefa Cup, making it to the semi-finals, helped club finances. United's chairman, Freddy Shepherd, today said: "We have turned a disaster, by not qualifying in the Champions League, into a profit."

The club was able to cut its wage bill by 1% to £44.9m, keeping salaries below 50% of United's turnover. The sale of Jonathan Woodgate to Real Madrid for £14m was not included in the annual report for last season.

The club's success will see shareholders get a dividend of 2.04p per share. Mr Shepherd's company, Shepherd Offshore, will receive £650,000, while director Douglas Hall's Cameron Hall and other family holdings will receive £1.8m.

Plans were also revealed for the UK's largest Adidas Superstore to be opened in the south stand of the ground in March, 2005.

The shop will be operated by the club but will be fitted out by Adidas. It is expected to attract more customers and will add to the club's long term financial growth. It will be alongside a new 1,200 capacity sports bar, which will open from December. A five-year deal has been signed with Newcastle Breweries to provide the alcohol. Mr Shepherd said: "The bar should be open in December, and early next year the Adidas superstore will open. That will make a significant difference. The store will be the largest in the UK."

The annual report thanked Sir Bobby Robson, who left the club in August, for his five years of work. The yearly results, up to July 31, showed average attendance for Premier League and Carling Cup games was up from 51,053 to 51,715, but down for Uefa competitions at 41,753 compared to 43,666 the season before.

Match turnover was up to £33.9m after 28 games were played at St James' Park, compared to 27 in the previous year.

Income from the sale of season tickets and matchday corporate facilities grew by 17% to a club record high.

Net debt decreased by £5.7m but still stands at £37.2m, although the cash from Woodgate's transfer is not included as it occurred after the company's year end. Other players to depart from St James' Park on a fee were Nolberto Solano to Aston Villa (£1.75m), Lomana LuaLua to Portsmouth (£1.2m) and Gary Speed to Bolton (£500,000).

Seven other players were released on free transfers.

Mr Shepherd said: "I am pleased to announce a further successful year for United, delivering a strong performance on and off the pitch."

Woody Believe It

Former Toon defender Jonathan Woodgate has pulled up in training according to Sky Sports News. Woodgate, who hasn't played a match since April was expected to make his Real Madrid bow in a friendly game against Alcorcon on Tuesday but it looks like is long wait for a return to fitness will be a few more weeks off yet.
