Souness Makes BEST EVER Start For A Toon Boss
Graeme Souness' Newcastle United have made their best ever start under
a new manager with 8 games unbeaten, smashing the previous record
of 5 games - held by Arthur Cox who took over the reigns from Bill
McGarry who resigned 4 games into the 1980-81 season. Not even King
Kev, who's Man City team once again left St. James' empty handed yesterday,
could lay claim to such a great start with KK losing just his second
match in charge.
This is an incredible achievement for Souness who's appointment was
met with astonishment, bewilderment and a huge smattering of disappointment
- from yours truly included.
Everything is going right for the canny Scot and although sterner
tests are around the corner and an inevitable defeat never far away,
he can do no more than what he is doing at the moment (especially
given the defence he inherited) and maybe, just maybe, Souness is
the man.
We all expected a big name, a manager with top-class credentials.
Ottmar Hitzfeld was a big favourite amongst the masses and Newcastle-Online
campaigned intensely to raise this awareness by bombarding all media
outlets and the club while most of the media were promoting the likes
of Steve "I'm a Geordie you know" Bruce and David "don't
blame me" O'Dreary.
Alas we ended up with Souness, not on anybody's list, not wanted by
anyone and not the man to take us forward...
11 points from a possible 15 later and here we are today, rightly
praising the man. Funny old game football eh! Well done Souey and
long may it continue.
Memory Lane: 24 Years Ago Today...
One to forget, but it did get better, eventually...
A sorry Newcastle side were thrashed 6-0 at Stamford Bridge in Arthur
Cox's 9th game at the helm after taking over from Bill McGarry who
resigned 4 games into the 80-81 season. Cox's reign got off to a great
start, undefeated in his first 5 games, but he clearly still had a
lot do if he was to change the fortunes of a United team badly in
need of some leadership and quality. Both Chris Waddle and Chris Withe
were making their second starts for the Magpies against Chelsea with
Bruce Halliday making his debut. One to forget for the trio on an
unforgettable afternoon.
Teams:
United: Carr, Carney, Withe, Martin, Boam, Halliday, Shinton, Cartwright,
Waddle (Koenen), Rafferty, Wharton.
Chelsea: Borota, Nutton, Rofe, Bumstead, Droy, Chivers, Driver, Fillery,
Lee, Walker (Britton), Rhoades-Brown.
Attendance: 22,916
United went onto finish 11th in the 2nd Division that season with
42 points and found goals hard to come by - Bobby Shinton topping
the charts with a total of just 7 goals. Cox went onto manage Newcastle
for a further 3 seasons, completing 169 games and signing players
like Kevin keegan and Peter Beardsley - eventually winning promotion
to the 1st Division in his final season before resigning over a contract
dispute for Derby County. Cox of course would make a return to St.
James' Park with KK as the manager. |
