NUFC News From Oct 24th 2004

Result: NUFC 4-3 Manchester City

It's now 6 wins from 8 for Souness and 12 points from 15 after a storming, heart stopping, spills and thrills packed afternoon of sheer unadulterated entertainment at St. James' Park as our former King of the Castle saw his Manchester City team lose to a last minute Craig Bellamy goal. Giving the Toon a 4-3 win and all 3 points to move us up into 6th in the Premiership.

After a goalless and fairly uneventful first-half that we pretty much dominated without really threatening that much, 52,316 fans were treat to a 7 goal thriller in the second period with Newcastle racing into a 2-0 lead thanks to Laurent Robert's first of the season and first in 28 games after the Frenchman rocketed in a free-kick. Our second come courtesy of an Alan Shearer pen after Stephen Carr was tripped in the box as the No. 9 chases Wor Jackie's record - Big Al's 8th of the campaign.

With 58 minutes on the clock we were coasting and City were buried. Then the fight-back began with a Sean Wright-Phillips goal and Robbie Fowler penalty after Butt tripped him dragging KK's men back into the game. 2-2 with 67 minutes gone and game on.

Then 2 minutes later Newcastle went back in front with Robbie Eliott getting his first goal since 2001, heading in Robert's free-kick.

City responded again just 6 minutes after with Wright-Phillips getting his second of the game. But with the game heading towards a draw up popped Craig Bellamy in the 89th minute to clinch the winner.

A pulsating and magnificent afternoon's feast. I'm knackered. Well done Souey and the lads and hard to bare KK.

Souness Wants 4 New Players But No Duff Signings

Souness quotes from Sky Sports:

"We have been linked with Damien Duff but I am not sure if he'll want to leave London.

"But that's the type of class player we want in order to improve this squad because he is of the highest standard.

"We have some good players here but if we want to do well we need a few additions. We are light.

"I will probably spoil the chairman's breakfast on Sunday morning when he reads this. But I've got a relationship with him and I will tell him we need to strengthen with maybe four more players."

9 Years Ago Today

A trip down memory lane...

9 years ago to this day, on a cold Sunday afternoon at the Dell, Kevin Keegan's high flying Newcastle were beaten by two stupendous Matthew Le Tissier goals in front of the Sky cameras with goalie Mike Hooper picking up the blame by the Toon Army and the press the following day. Andy Cole scored United's consolation goal and a certain Peter Reid played in midfield for the Saints. This game was made famous by Lee Clark's tantrum where he kicked a microphone after coming off as a substitute for Alex Mathie and from that moment on Clarkie never really got back into the picture at his home town team.

October proved to be a difficult month for Keegan and his team with 3 defeats but the Toon went onto finish 3rd in the League to qualify for Europe with Andy Cole scoring 41 goals.

Teams:

United: Hooper, Watson, Beresford, Venison, Scott, Bracewell, Lee, Clark (Mathie), Cole, Beardsley, Allen (Sellars).

Southampton: Flowers, Kenna, Moore (Moody), Wood, Adams, Reid, Maddison, Allen, Benali, Dowie, Le Tissier.
