Newcastle coasted into the group stages of the UEFA Cup last night
in Tel Aviv by beating Hapoel Bnei Sakhnin 5-1 on the night and 7-1
on aggregate. Patrick Kluivert grabbed himself a
brace to make it 6 goals in 5 starts for the Dutchman and Alan
Shearer scored a hat-trick to take his European tally to
20 goals in a Black & White shirt. 10 more than his nearest rival
Wyn Davies.
New UEFA Cup Format - Confused?
I've had lots of e-mails from a number of confused Toon supporters
regarding UEFA's new format for the group stages so here is a break
down of what is what in plain English.
Newcastle will be drawn into a group of 5 on Tuesday 5th October at
11.00am. In this group we will play 2 teams at home and 2 away. As
a top seed we will be paired at home with the 2nd and 4th seeded teams.
There is no two legs in this format. We will play 4 games and sit
out the one that clashes with the League Cup.
Qualification from this group will be achieved by finishing 1st, 2nd
or 3rd. After the group stages it's back to two-legged knock out matches
all the way to the final.
Along with Lazio, Parma, Feyenoord, AEK Athens, VfB Stuttgart, Club
Brugge and Rangers, Newcastle are in the group of top seeds. Meaning
we will not be grouped with any of them.
We can not be grouped with Middlesbrough either although we could
face Scottish club Hearts.
Our sequence of matches in the reformatted competition will read like
this: Match day 1 - away (Thursday 21st
October) Match day 2 - home (Thursday 4th
November) Match Day 3 - away (Thursday 25th
November) *Match Day 4 - no game (Wednesday
1st/Thursday 2nd December)
Match Day 5 - home (Wednesday 15th/Thursday 16th
December)
*Due to League Cup |
