18-Man Toon Squad Named For Athens
Given, Harper, Carr, Hughes, Elliott, O'Brien, Bramble, Taylor, Bernard,
Ambrose, Jenas, Bowyer, Robert, Milner, Brittain, Shearer, Bellamy,
Ameobi.
No Kluivert who is still struggling with an injury and no Ronny Johnsen
still who limped out of last nights 1-0 defeat to Blackburn reserves
at Kingston Park. Bramble makes the squad thought he isn't expected
to feature. Souness could go with the same starting 11 from Sunday
minus Nicky Butt who is suspended of course.
Should Bellamy Double Up On The Old Shin Guards?
Probably not...
Since taking over from Sir Bobby Robson early September Graeme Souness
has been calm personified but those snarling traits that made him
a player to be feared and indeed in later life, a manager to be feared
(ask Yorke), came out to play today when the Scot reacted to questioning
regarding Craig Bellamy's 'outburst' at being subbed on Sunday at
the Valley.
Depending on which report you read, it seems Souness is ready to blow
a lid any moment and that Bellamy better double up on shin-guards.
However reading between the lines, it appears that he is more upset
about the spot-light that this has brought on our preparations for
Thursday's match in Athens.
Anyway, this is what Souness said:
"I'm angry about it, not because I was called whatever I was
called because I'm a big boy and I've been called worse in the past.
"I'm angry because we're concentrating on this and not the
important thing which is Thursday night. It happens too much and we
should only be interested in the next game, not talking about incidents
like this.
"All these things have to stop, if we're going to win things
at this club we need to concentrate on what matters, not this petulance,
not people acting like children. It has to stop and it will stop,
I guarantee the supporters that. He (Bellamy) in particular has to
sort himself out.
"From the outside looking in before I took this job it seemed
to be a recurring situation. The club were making headlines not for
attractive football but because some dope was doing what he shouldn't
be doing."
Fleeting, But Worth It I Bet...
41 years ago to this day a player named Les O'Neil
made his one and only appearance for Newcastle United in a 5-2 defeat
away to Portsmouth. O'Neil, a left winger, was a member of United's
FA Youth Cup winning team of 62 and was a £200 quid signing
from Blyth Spartans. Soon after making his debut he was offloaded
to Darlington on a free transfer.
In total there have been 79 players who have pulled on the Black &
White shirt just the once, they are:
Jack Alderson, John Allen, Ron Anderson, John Archibald, Stan Barber, John Barker, J. Barr, Tony Bell, Bob Benson, Neville Black, Robert Blanthorne, Thomas Blyth, Hugh Bolton, J. Reserves: NUFC 0-1 Blackburn
Newcastle's reserves shocking form continued last night at Kingston
Park as Souness' former side's stiffs come away with a 1-0 victory
thanks to a Jemal Johnson goal. Both Titus Bramble and Ronny Johnsen
started the match but the Norwegian was taken off with a knee injury.
Reserve team coach Tommy Craig said:
"Ronny had a knock on the nerve on his knee and lost feeling in his
foot for a little while, but it came back after a bit.
"We'll have a look at it but I'm optimistic - it's a fairly common
thing. He's just jarred his knee as he's landed."
On the match:
"It was extremely disappointing. We're not playing well, and not looking
like scoring goals.
"Our passing's a major disappointment to us."
United: Caig, Taylor, Hughes, Smylie (Webster 79), Johnsen (Brennan
18), Bramble, Brittain, Howe (Walton 62), Bates, Guy, Cave. Subs not
used: Gate, Bartlett. |
