Memory Lane 1920: Roker Choker For The Mackems
Double delight for the Toon...
84 years ago today, Newcastle came away from Roker Park with a 2-0
win over our Mackem friends thanks to goals from Stan Seymour
and centre-forward Neil Harris to give United a double
over Sunderland in front of a 35,000 crowd, having already trounced
them the previous week 6-1 at St. James' Park. The match, the 44th
Tyne-Wear Derby, brought United their 14th win over the Wearsiders.
The goal heroes that day would later repeat their feats but on a much
grander scale in an even bigger match.
Newcastle team that day:
Lawrence (GK), McCracken (cpt), Hampson, McIntosh, Low, Finlay, Aitken,
Ward, Harris, Smailes, Seymour.
Newcastle went onto finish 5th in the 1st Division that season with
50 points, 9 more than Sunderland who finished down in 12th and just
4 more than Middlesbrough who finished 3 places behind us.
Harris went onto top our goalscoring charts with 22 goals in all competitions
that year and in his 4 years at the club the quick, burly striker
would go onto write his name into United's history books - scoring
101 goals in 194 appearances, making him our 9th highest goalscorer
of all-time. One of those 101 goals was scored at Wembley in a 2-0
win over Aston Villa in the 1924 FA Cup Final.
United's other goalscorer against the Mackems, Seymour, also scored
in the 24 final and like Harris, he too would write his name into
the history books. Making 266 appearances and scoring 84 goals and
collecting a League Championship winners medal in 1927.
Seymour went onto become known as "Mr Newcastle" and picked
up two more FA Cup medals - as manager.
Not bad for a Mackem!
Olly Not Happy With Toon
Olivier Bernard has once again expressed concerns over a new contract.
The left-back, who is available to talk to interested clubs from January
onwards, claims Newcastle are messing him about.
Bernard quotes:
"The way they are treating me over the contract shows they have no
respect for me - that's something I really don't like.
"They don't understand what I want. I'd love to stay at the
club but I don't want to waste my time.
"I think I've proved to that club what I can do. If they don't
want me, they should say it.
"The coach said he wanted to keep me and that he'll help me
get a contract. But it's still the same as it was two months ago and
six months ago.
"They keep playing with me, every week they come back with
more money than the last.
"I think I've proved enough to the chairman, I felt last season
I was one of the best players."
Why is everything always a long drawn out affair with our club?
Sir Bobby To Spill The Beans Over Big Al/Fat Fred
Feud?
Sir Bobby Robson's autobiography 'Living the Game' is to get an update
to include a new chapter which will cover his sacking and final 12
months in the United hot-seat, apparently. Rumours abound that Bobby
will expose his 'relationship' with Alan Shearer and Freddy Shepherd,
warts and all style.
It's common knowledge that Bobby and Big Al fell out and that relations
between the manager and Chairman were somewhat strained. Whether Bobby
will reveal to what extent remains to be seen. I guess we'll have
to wait and see. |
