Jenas & Butt Star In England Win
In form Jermaine Jenas was handed his first full
senior cap by Sven in place of the injured/suspended David Beckham
as England beat Azerbaijan 1-0 in Baku earlier tonight with under-fire
Michael Owen grabbing the winner. Jenas' Toon team-mate Nicky
Butt also started the game and where as JJ only lasted 70
minutes, the United No.4 played the full 90 where he also picked up
a booking.
In other internationals Craig Bellamy played a full
90 minutes for Wales as his country's hopes of qualifying for the
2006 World Cup were surely dashed after Poland ran out 3-2 winners
at the Millenuim Stadium.
Toon trio Shay Given, Stephen Carr
and Andy O'Brien played the full 90 minutes in the
Republic of Ireland's 2-0 win over the Faroe Islands where as Aaron
Hughes also played a full match for Northern Ireland who drew 3-3
with Austria.
Yesterday James Milner played the full game for England
Under-21's in their 0-0 draw with Azerbaijan where as Stephen
Taylor, also in the squad, was an unused sub.
Reserves: Aston Villa 3-0 NUFC
Newcastle's reserves poor start to their campaign continued last night
at Villa Park as the hosts thrashed Tommy Craig's side 3-0. United
with Titus Bramble and Ronny Johnsen in the team, with the centre-back
pair both playing the full 90 minutes, were punished by a brace from
Stephen Cooke and a Gabriel Agbonlahor strike.
United: Bartlett, Gate, Cave, Johnsen, Bramble, McClen (Webster 67), Brittain,
Smilie (Edgar 46), Bates (Finnigan 55), Guy, Howe. Subs not used:
Smith, Walton.
Craig had this to say regarding Bramble's comeback:
"Titus came through the game very well. His fitness has taken another
step forward and his contribution was good.
"The 90 minutes was an ideal workout for him and he's had no
reaction.
"He'll be a bit stiff today but it was his first game and that's
what you expect.
"As a fitness exercise it was perfect for him. And Ronny has also
taken another step forward." |
