Toon Striker On His Way Hyem

From today's Chronicle:

Michael Chopra could return for Newcastle United against Chelsea in the Magpies' final game of the season. The striker's loan spell at Barnsley, which saw him score 17 league goals, came to an end on Saturday when the Tykes wrapped up their League One season.

And the 21-year-old is eligible for Sunday's home game against Jose Mourinho's Premiership and Carling Cup champions, when Graeme Souness will be without Shola Ameobi through suspension following his dismissal at Everton.

Chopra, whose present contract runs out in the summer, returns to training on Tyneside tomorrow, with Barnsley hosting their end-of-season awards tonight. The Gosforth-born striker has been named their young player of the year after ending the season top scorer, and Chopra is now hoping to be involved on Sunday having last pulled on a black-and-white shirt in the pre-season game at Celtic.

Chopra was taken on loan by then Oakwell boss Paul Hart, who had him for a month at Nottingham Forest the previous season.

And despite having dropped down two divisions, Chopra's belief that he can score goals in the Premiership has never wavered and he could yet get a chance next season under Souness, with talks having opened on a new contract.

There is interest from elsewhere following his goal exploits with Barnsley, but Chopra would still love to make it at Newcastle.

In the meantime, his chances of featuring for United against Chelsea have been helped by Ameobi's sending off, with Souness only having Alan Shearer and Patrick Kluivert available for the visit of the Londoners.
