Alan Doh'liver Column: Liverpool Fans Can Only Look
On In Envy
Make no mistake, Liverpool's winning of the European Champions Cup
can't gloss over the fact that they are led by a foreign manager who
knows nothing about the Merseyside culture. Liverpool's fans must
be distraught that instead of home grown lads like Macmanaman and
Fowler, they are having to watch foreign mercenaries like Morientes
and Hamman turn out in those famous red shirts. What wouldn't they
give to have one of their own return as manager to bring back the
glory days?
But United fans need not worry, for I have it on good authority that
if approached Graeme Souness would not be allowed to leave by Freddie
Shepherd. I can reveal that United's far-sighted chairman ensured
a clause that no rival team from the Premier League would be allowed
to entertain talks with Souness unless they were prepared to pay a
whopping £15m compensation package. Freddie is a canny businessman
and knowing that Chelsea were sniffing around to snatch top boss Souness,
acted quickly to nip it in the bud.
So the message is loud and clear to Liverpool and their fans. Hands
off you thieving Scousers; for we have Souness and you can cry into
your Champions cup for all we care. Freddie Shepherd knows that United
fans don't want a foreign manager - except if he's Scottish - so looks
like Liverpool are stuck with the hopeless Spaniard while United fans
dream of success next season. Will they shed a tear for their Mersey
rivals? I think not Mr Benitez. I think not.
Work In Progress: Excerpts From A Toon Book I'm
Writing
Bored? Fancy a read? News is slow so
I thought I'd post an excerpt of a chapter from a book about Newcastle's
managers I planned on writing but haven't had the time to get stuck
into over the past few months. Call it work in progress and something
I one day hope to achieve. The chapter is titled 'Shot In The Dark'
and covers United's very first manager - Andy Cunningham.

Geordie Turns Down Newcastle
Quotes attributed to Peter Ramage's agent Garry Thornburn from Sky
Sports News: "He has had a taste of first team football
and he just feels he might only get a bit part next season if he stays.
"He wants to fulfil his ambitions and that now looks to be away from
Newcastle.
"We cannot comment on the teams interested in Peter.
"We will sit down next week and analyse the options available to him.
"Money had nothing to do with Peter's decision and he want the fans
to know that. This is purely about football."
It comes to something when a Geordie is looking to leave his home
town team. If he does leave, it will make the sale of Aaron Hughes
an even worse decision because we'll be losing another player that
can play in a number of positions. Who is next out the door? |
