NUFC News From May 25th 2005

Likely Story!

Quotes from Patrick Kluivert's agent Paul Foortse:

"We had a clause in the contract. When Newcastle were not in the top ten of The Premiership, Patrick could leave the club for free.

"Newcastle laughed about the clause as they couldn't expect that they wouldn't be in the top ten.

"We have seen it.

"Now they couldn't exercise the option for another two seasons and Patrick can look for another club."

Who Said What? NUFC's Season in Quotes - August 2004

Has there ever been a month like it in the club's history? I doubt it. The month of August started with murmurs of unrest between Sir Bobby Robson and Freddy Shepherd and then there was talk of Alan Shearer being unhappy, the breakout of Conjunctivitis, the signing of Stephen Carr, the poor start to the season, Kieron Dyer's refusal to play on the right wing, the sale of Jonathan Woodgate, the bid to sign Wayne Rooney and of course, the end of Bobby's 5 year reign as Newcastle manager. 31 incredible days. Who said what during the 8th month of 2004? Check it out...

New Twist In Bellamy Saga?

From the BBC website:

Celtic manager Martin O'Neill is to leave the club after Saturday's Scottish Cup final, with Gordon Strachan taking over from 1 June.

"I am leaving Celtic purely for personal reasons and I am extremely sorry to be departing in such circumstances," said O'Neill.

O'Neill's wife Geraldine has been receiving treatment for cancer.

His assistants John Robertson and Steve Walford will also depart the club as Strachan takes the helm.

Where does that now leave Craig Bellamy?

Good News (Hopefully)

An interesting story from Sky Sports News this afternoon, maybe...

Arsenal are stepping up their interest in Ricardo, with the Sporting Lisbon goalkeeper set for talks on his future after Portugal's upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

Ricardo has been strongly linked with a summer move to The Premiership, with Liverpool and Newcastle United also on his trail.

Newcastle are reportedly ready to offer Hugo Viana as a makeweight in a deal for Ricardo but Arsenal could now beat their Premiership rivals to the punch.

The Gunners are tipped to sign a new keeper during the close season, after Manuel Almunia failed to convince when he briefly replaced Jens Lehmann as first choice.

Portugal international Ricardo is one of the more established keepers on the continent and played a key role in helping Sporting reach the Uefa Cup final.

His performances in Europe caught the eye of Gunners boss Arsene Wenger and he has been closely watched by the FA Cup winners in recent months.

Sporting would be loath to lose the 29-year-old but his agent Nuno Baptista told skysports.com last week that Ricardo has attracted offers from England.

There is also interest in the shot-stopper from Spain but a decision on his future is unlikely to be taken until the middle of June.

Ricardo is due to feature in Portugal's World Cup qualifiers against Slovakia and Estonia and Baptista confirmed talks with Sporting will be held after the game in Tallinn on June 8.

"As a great player, Ricardo has received some offers," Baptista told O Jogo.

"But earlier we had taken the decision to talk with Sporting after his commitments with the national team."

Firstly he's a poor 'keeper and having been linked with him, I'd be delighted if he ended up at Arsenal and not Newcastle. Secondly if they do secure his services that would end their alleged interest in wor Shay. Just the rumoured interest from the United of Manchester to fend off now...
