Shearer Defends Goal Return
Alan Shearer quotes appearing in yesterday's Chronicle:
"The last time I looked at the goalscoring charts - yesterday
- I was still well up. In the League I only get 7 goals, OK. Stats
are there for people to make what they want of them.
"People will point to my League record, that's a fact, but it's also
true that I have scored 19 goals in 40 starts, which only three players
have bettered in the Premier League - Henry, Johnson and Defoe.
"In the League I've had a disappointing season, yes, but don't forget
I missed three months through injury.
"I am my biggest critic - I don't need anyone else to tell me how
I've done and I was disappointed that I did not get that 20th goal
against Chelsea.
"I missed the Fulham and Everton games because my performances in
the last two to three weeks have been tired. No-one has to tell me
that.
"I said to that to the manager, he agreed, there is no problem between
us.
"It's been another typically eventful Newcastle season - there have
been ups and there have been downs.
"In my opinion, the club needs freshening up, udoubtedly, and both
the Chairman and manager will be working hard to get the names in
they want.
"If they can get them in then the football club will be a better place,
hopefully before the League campaign kicks off next year."
