Souness Is A Big Softie Really
From the BBC Website:
Newcastle manager Graeme Souness cast aside his tough image before
Saturday's 1-0 win over Liverpool by taking time to comfort match
mascot Adam Horner.
The six-year-old was so daunted walking out at St James's Park that
Souness escorted him onto the pitch himself.
"Souness brought him out and took him into the dug out," Adam's Dad,
Phil, told BBC Radio Five Live. "He spent five minutes trying to reassure
him.
"When Souness realised it was close to kick off he had to run back
inside."
Horner had been told to go out onto the pitch and wait for his son
to run out as the Newcastle mascot.
What he had not expected was to watch Souness neglecting his squad
of Premiership footballers in favour of looking after the young boy.
"The next thing I see is Adam walking out onto the pitch with Souness,
who had spent seven or eight minutes with him explaining what would
happen and how things would work," Horner added.
"When Souness left him Alan Shearer took over and he only left Adam's
side when he had to greet the other team. At that stage Shay Given
let Adam take a couple of shots at goal.
"All the advice I received before the match was Adam would be really
looked after by the officials but I didn't realise it would be Shearer,
Souness and Given.
"It was fantastic and a credit to Souness who sometimes gets a reputation
for being a bit of a hard man."

At set-pieces that is. Graeme Souness
quotes appearing in today's Journal from the Toon boss
regarding Laurent Robert's dead ball abilities:
"In terms of his abilities at dead-ball situations, Laurent
is up there with all the top players around today.
"He is up there with anyone you would care to name. That is
four goals he has got from set-pieces now and I don't think
even David Beckham scores many more than that in a season. Off
the top of my head, I don't think Zidane does either."
High praise indeed! |
