Nokia-Debitel U-19s Cup Final Result: NUFC
0-1 Borussia Dortmund
Newcastle's Under-19 side made it
to the Final of the 2005 Nokia-Debitel Cup over in Düsseldorf,
Germany earlier on this afternoon but lost 1-0 to German side
Borussia Dortmund who beat Real Madrid's Under-19s 6-4 on penalties
after drawing the match 1-1 in their Semi-Final. Dortmund's
Saka scoring the clinching goal against John Carver's side.
United's run to the Final started in the DHL Group where the
Black & Whites were paired with the Turkish Under-19 national
side and VFB Stuttgart. The Magpies beat Turkey 1-0 thanks to
a Dean Critchlow goal and drew 0-0 with Stuttgart for
a Quarter-Final match up with hosts Fortuna Düsseldorf.
A 16th minute Liam Atkin goal opened the scoring for
the Toon but that lead lasted just 2 minutes as Ayranci equalised
and that's how the scores stayed, meaning it went down to a
penalty shoot-out to decide the outcome. United dumped out the
home side 6-5 with Craig Baxter, Atkin, Marc
Walton, Christopher Shanks, Phillip Cave and
Andrew Carroll all converting their spot-kicks.
Into The Semi-Final's and Grasshoppers Zurich from Switezerland
were all that stood in the way of Carver and his team getting
to the Final. The Swiss were dully rolled over 2-0 thanks to
Atkin and Walton who grabbed the goals.
Sadly they just couldn't quite manage it in the Final but a
sterling effort by all nonetheless, well done Carver and the
lads.
Now lets hope the senior side go one better...
Academy Director John Carver on his team:
"We were in a tough competition with a very young depleted
squad with all the injuries we have at the moment. For example
Dean Critchlow is playing at U15 level and he and the other
lads faced the Turkish National U19s side and beat them.
"I am really proud of them, I watched every team play at some
point over the weekend and Borussia Dortmund were the strongest
side by far. We gave them a really tough game and they scored
ten minutes from time with what was a break away goal from our
free kick.
"The experience that the yougsters got in this competition is
invaluable and even though the games were short (25 minutes
each way), going all the way to the final meant they still had
a hectic schedule over the three days.
"Liam Atkin was the leading goalscorer which is saying something
considering he is normally a defender, but we had to play him
up front because of a striker shortage! So the lads have done
me proud despite losing the final." |
