FA Cup Semi-Final Draw: NUFC Vs Man Utd
Newcastle have been drawn against Manchester United in the Semi-Final
of the FA Cup. We have played the Red Devils 3 times in the
Old Cup and have never beaten them once. Our record stands as:
Played 3, won 0, drew 0, lost 3, for 2, against 6
We have faced them once before in a Semi-Final, losing 1-0 back
in 1908-09. And of course, they beat us 2-0 in the '99 Final.
Well, we have to beat them some day. Freddy
Shepherd on the draw: "It's not the draw
we wanted, but it won't have been the draw Manchester United
wanted either.
"But there's no reason why we cannot beat them. We won't be
frightened of them.
"We've done well to beat Chelsea and Tottenham in the last two
rounds, so why can't we beat Manchester United?
"We owe them one for the Charity Shield defeat at Wembley in
1996, and also for the FA Cup Final defeat in 1999, so we'll
look forward to this one.
"It will be a fantastic occasion for our supporters who go down
to the Millennium Stadium. The final is back at Wembley next
season, so hopefully we can go there twice this year!"
Alan Shearer on the draw: "It's
a tough draw, but we have beaten Chelsea and we can do the same
to Manchester United.
"I'm not disappointed with the draw, in the FA cup you have
to take what you get.
"I said before the FA Cup kicked off that you are going to have
to beat either Manchester United, Chelsea or Arsenal to win
the cup.
"It could be that we have to beat all three of them, so if we
do win it then we'll have certainly done it the hard way."
Olympiakos 1-1 AEK Athens
UEFA Cup opponents Olympiakos warmed up for Wednesday's return leg
with a 1-1 draw at home to AEK Athens. A game played behind closed
doors. Cypriot striker Yiannis Okkas opened the scoring for Oly on
19 minutes but AEK's Katsouranis equalized in the 71st. The point
maintains the Greek side's lead at the top of their League table,
level on points with Panathinaikos.

Another Toon Match Moved: Man Utd (a)
Newcastle's trip to Old Trafford which
was scheduled to be played on Saturday 23rd of April, will now be
played the following day on the Sunday due to Sky deciding to screen
the clash. The game will be a 4.05pm kick-off BST.
Shearer For Centre-Half?
We may need him at the back... with
defensive injuries to Babayaro, Bramble, O'Brien, Taylor, Elliott
and Boumsong Cup-tied, we could be left short at the back on
Wednesday as we look to make it to the Quarter-Finals of the
UEFA Cup.
Souness could well face the prospect of throwing Ramage in at
the deep end should the walking wounded not recover in time
or shuffle the pack. N'Zogbia could play left-back with Hughes
moving into the centre but who would partner him?
Faye looks the obvious candidate, but maybe Shearer can relinquish
his goalscoring responsibilities and do to forwards what he's
been doing to defenders for 16-years?
Rivaldo wouldn't come out of the dressing room if he had to
face Big Al.
FAO The Media In General: Stop Patronizing
Toon Fans!
[rant]Far be it for me to speak out
on behalf of Geordies and Toon supporters the world over but
I'm getting quite sick of this and feel I'm speaking for the
majority here:
No, Newcastle United supporters would NOT rather win the FA
Cup than the League Title itself! Read it carefully, then re-read
it again until you get it into your thick skulls. Better still,
pop into the forum and start a poll or pop doon the Toon and
actually ask people.
Who in their right mind, other than Shearer who would swap his
solitary Premiership winners Medal with Blackburn for an FA
Cup one with the Toon (it's personal), would rather Newcastle
won the old Cup than the Premiership? Would you? I know I wouldn't.
To win the League means you are the undisputed best team in
the Country. Surely that means more than being the best side
over 6 games, knock-out games no less.
It's a myth, just like all the others. No we wouldn't rather
lose 4-3 than win 1-0 either. Just check out the celebrations
at the end of our 1-0 victories over Chelsea, Liverpool and
Spurs yesterday. Are these people for real? Lazy journalism
I say. The same journalism that claims we blew a 12 point lead
at the top of the League, not forgetting Manchester United had
games in hand. The same lazy journalism that hypes the FA Cup
beyond all need. What's this nonsense about Shearer and Stanley
Mathews too? What's all that about?
Shearer must be cringing. They don't need to sell the FA Cup
and they certainly don't need to over romanticise it. Of course
it holds a special place in the hearts of Toon fans, it's a
special trophy. Any trophy to a club that hasn't won one in
36 years is a special trophy.
But howay...
I'm actually getting e-mails from supporters of various club
saying; "Shearer deserves to win it and so do Newcastle and
your fans". No we don't! We don't deserve nothing. You don't
deserve anything for reaching the Semis. And lets hope Souness
and Co. think like that too, otherwise we won't win it.[/rant]
Monday blues/hangover/can't be bothered with all the hype...
P.S Get In, we're ganning to Cardiff... WOO HOO!

Souness Matches Keegan's Run, But Can He Equal Or Better It?
Yesterday's 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur made it a straight seven
wins in succession for Souness and his men, matching Kevin Keegan's
side's run of 1995. The last time a Newcastle United side won 7 games
off the trot.
That run included the following wins:
Manchester City (h) 3-1
Bristol City (a) 5-0
Chelsea (h) 2-0
Everton (a) 3-1
Bristol City (h) 3-1
QPR (a) 3-1
Wimbledon (h) 6-1
A run that propelled United to the top of the Premiership. A 4-0 win
over Stoke City away in the League Cup just 4 days after the trouncing
of Wimbledon extended that run to 8 games, a winning run that came
to an end in the following match, away to Spurs of all club's. David
Ginola grabbing a goal in a 1-1 draw.
Can the Toon make it 8 wins in succession, can we equal/beat KK's
record?
I've probably put the kiss of death on it now... |
