Shearer Testimonial?

An interesting snippet from this morning's Guardian newspaper:

Alan Shearer is to be awarded a testimonial by Newcastle United at the end of next season to mark his 10 years at the club. No official announcement has been made but sources at St. James' Park have let it be known that Shearer has been informed already.

And another interesting snippet:

Yesterday also brought enhanced speculation that Newcastle have edged ahead of Everton in the race to sign Chelsea's Scott Parker. Parker missed much of last season through injury but even when fit struggled to dislodge Frank Lampard or Claude Makelele from Chelsea's midfield.

Potentially available for as little as £4m 16 months after he left Charlton for £10m, Parker would represent a major coup for the Newcastle manager Graeme Souness. A deal may be completed next week.

Souness has returned from holiday and is expected to be at Lansdowne Road this afternoon to see the Republic of Ireland play Israel. The Israeli midfielder Yossi Benayoun of Racing Santander is on Souness's list of possible purchases and the Scot may also take the opportunity to speak to Shay Given, Newcastle's goalkeeper, who remains unsettled. But Souness could be stymied in his recruitment aims by the failure as yet to offload Craig Bellamy or Laurent Robert.
