The Insiders View: Scott Parker
So, in Scott Parker, just what kind
of player have we bought exactly? We find out. Newcastle-Online.com,
in our never ending quest to bring you informed views from far afield,
hooked up with two fans of Parker's former club's to get their views
on our new £6.5m signing. Rich Godden editor of a Chelsea supporters
website and David Robson editor of a Charlton fansite, were kind enough
to answer a few questions we posed to them regarding our new boy.
And this is what they had to say...

Souness Confirms Figo Interest
Toon manager Graeme Souness has confirmed an interest in Real Madrid's
Luis Figo who Sky Sports News were reporting yesterday evening
was in talks with the Scot over a move to Newcastle.
Souness said: "There is an interest there as far as
Luis Figo is concerned but we don't want to say any more at the moment."
Figo, who has been touted by his representitives to every club in
the Premiership, already being snubbed by both Liverpool and Manchester
United, is rumoured to be wanting £80,000 per week and has "other
offers" from Souness' former club Galatasaray, Qatar, France and Spain,
though he prefers a switch to the Premiership. Claiming:
"I have always said that the Premier League is a competition which
I would like to play in some day and that has not changed.
"The Premier League has improved a lot in the last few years and many
of the best players in the world have signed with clubs in England.
"It is very different from the Spanish league, but I am sure that
I will be able to adapt if someday I end up playing there."
From what I gather there is a lot of work to be done on any proposed
deal and it wouldn't surprise me if this one just fizzled out. Don't
build your hopes up, just yet folks.
Toon Make New Signing
Glenn Roeder, from the official site: Glenn
Roeder, former Newcastle United captain and centre half, has today
been appointed Academy Manager under restructuring plans revealed
by the club yesterday.
The club has moved quickly to ensure that restructuring is put into
effect immediately to be ready for the scholars' pre-season training
return in July.
As a player Glenn was always a favourite of the Newcastle fans and
his return to the North East will undoubtedly be endorsed by United
fans everywhere.
Roeder said: "I am absolutely delighted to have been given this opportunity.
"I am looking forward to unearthing some talented youngsters who I
hope will eventually make it into the first team.
"This area is undoubtedly one of the true hotbeds of football. I know
that from the time I spent here as a player, and I'm looking forward
to returning to the club in this role - it's a great challenge for
me."
Roeder played 215 games for United as a player, scoring 10 goals.
Welcome back Glenn.
Strange Developments At Newcastle...
A statement from the official site: Newcastle United
has decided to restructure current staffing arrangements within the
Newcastle United Academy. As part of this restructuring, the role
of Academy Director has been discontinued and effectively made redundant,
in line with the action taken by many other clubs since the reduction
in the Academy age groups last year.
A new senior position is being created - that of Academy Manager,
and the coaching structure within the Academy is also being modified,
also to take account of the reduction in age groups.
As a result of this restructuring John Carver will leave the
club to pursue a career elsewhere in football.
The club will be seeking to appoint somebody of appropriate calibre
to the new position of Academy Manager as soon as possible. The Club
wishes to put on record their thanks to John Carver for the work he
has carried out in the past eight months.
Yet on the 6th of this month United released the following statement:
United have denied reports that Academy Director John Carver
has resigned from his position. Magpies chairman Freddy Shepherd,
responding to a story which appeared on Tuesday, said: "John is currently
on holiday, and the report of his supposed resignation is news to
me."
And only 8 days ago Carver himself said: "I haven't
left Newcastle. I will have to sort this out when I come back on Tuesday.
"I can only think someone has remembered I was mentioned in connection
with the Hartlepool job when it was last available and jumped to conclusions.
"I haven't spoken to anybody from the football club (Hartlepool).
Last time I was linked with it, I did speak to them, but not this
time around.
"In fact, I spoke to Martin Scott just before the play-offs to reassure
him that I hadn't spoken to anybody.
"I had a taste of management when I had the one game in charge before
Graeme took over - and I want more.
"When you have been a No 2, you always wonder in your mind about whether
you can do the top job.
"Don't get me wrong, I've got a very good job which I enjoy.
"But I worked with senior players for a long time and having got my
UEFA Pro Licence - the best coaching qualification you can get - I
want to work with senior players again.
"I've never hidden the fact."
Good luck to Carver, I'm sure he'll find a decent job in football.
He can be proud to have once managed his home-town team, even if it
was for 90 minutes. |
