Who Said What? NUFC's Season in Quotes - March 2005

Off the field March was a quiet month for United where as on it, they could do no wrong. Starting with a win over Liverpool further success followed in the FA and UEFA Cup with a comprehensive 7-1 hammering of Greek side Olympiakos over two legs the highlight of the season so far. The Souness and Co. could even put their feet up with two trips to Dubai. Who said what during the third month of 2005? Check it out...

Freddy Shepherd On Bellamy, Robert, Bowyer & Viana

Various reports this morning claimed Toon Chairman Freddy Shepherd was to hold a meeting with manager Graeme Souness over Craig Bellamy's future following quotes attributed to him in yesterday's papers that it's down to Souness whether Bellamy returns or not. However Freddy, via the official website, has rubbished these claims.

He said:

The reports that appeared on Monday morning are incorrect.

"I am not having a meeting with Graeme to discuss the situation with Craig Bellamy.

"The situation has not changed, it is as simple as that."

He also commented on Laurent Robert's move to Portsmouth but neither denied or confirmed the alleged loan deal, saying:

"Laurent will be at Portsmouth next season, and at the end of the season, whatever happens will be up to Portsmouth Football Club as he is their player."

Meanwhile the Chairman has revealed that talks between Lee Bowyer and Birmingham are no nearer to a satisfactory conclusion for both parties while Hugo Viana's situation at Sporting Lisbon is progressing well.

"Things are still the same as far as Lee Bowyer goes.

"There have been no developments over the weekend, and no deal has been agreed with Birmingham City, or any other club who have expressed an interest in signing Lee.

"We gave Birmingham permission to speak to Lee last week, and that is as far as it has gone.

"Again, there are no further developments with Hugo.

"Talks are progressing well, and we're all hopefully of reaching a satisfactory outcome for both the player and the club."
