Still Bitter After All These Years
Quotes attributed to former Toon boss Ruud Gullit from Icons.com:
"I definitely think Alan Shearer should have quit at the
end of the season like he said he was going to do. Shearer has got
too much influence at Newcastle and I don't think it's positive. He
has a major power over that team, and I question whether that's a
good thing.
"If he had stopped I think it would have helped the team move on.
Football has changed - it's not like it was - and one person cannot
have so much power these days.
"Things just aren't right at that football club. I said five or six
years ago that things had to be changed, but no-one listened. In the
end I had to leave, and I don't know if I should have been given more
time, but the club is still doing the same things wrong.
"You just have to listen to what Craig Bellamy has been saying to
know that I am right. He's been telling it how it really is. If they
don't change the way things go on at the club then the problems are
never going to go away.
"I must make it clear though that none of the problems lie at the
feet of the chairman. He is doing the best he can for the team. I
know that. He always gave his best while I was there, and I know he
only wants positive things for Newcastle.
"Nevertheless, that doesn't make things any easier for Graeme Souness
who I think has taken on an impossible job. It's a very difficult
club to manage. No-one has managed to bring success to the club. Even
Bobby Robson couldn't do it, and he's the most successful trainer
there's ever been.
"The fans must remember it's not always the trainer's fault. Other
things go on at the club which the trainer cannot help. But they must
not stop believing. They must expect and want the best because the
club has the potential to be the best."
Or maybe he has a point... |
