Souness On New Boy Scott Parker
"I have always been an admirer of his.
"He got into the team at Charlton as a young lad, showed a determination
along with his ability that marked him out as being a special player.
"At Chelsea, things conspired against him because he is more than
good enough to hold down a regular place in that team.
"But football is all about opinions as well and their manager and
the people there felt that they could let him go, and we are delighted
that we have got him because he is going to be a top player here for
a very long time, and he is the type of player our crowd will respond
to because he wants to win, and you can never have enough of them
around you." Meanwhile Parker has revealed that
Rob Lee and Steve Clarke helped sway his decision:
"I spoke to Rob, and also to Steve Clarke, the coach at Chelsea,
and they only had good things to say about this place.
"I think the fact I'm here speaks volumes for me feelings about this
club.
"I could have stayed in London with my family, but this is a fresh
start for me and I'm delighted to have made the move.
"Some of my family will be coming up here with me, and I'm sure it
won't take long to settle in.
"I've been impressed with what I've seen of the city so far, and I'm
looking forward to meeting my new team-mates and kicking off my career
at St. James' Park."

Newcastle Sign Scott Parker - Reaction
Newcastle United have completed the signing of Chelsea midfielder
Scott Parker for £6.5m on a 5 year contract. Parker, who completed
his medical this morning, will be officialy unveiled this afternoon
in a press conference.
Quotes from Parker on the move:
"This is the club for me.
"I know that other clubs were keen on me, but as soon as I heard Newcastle
were interested there was only one place I was going.
"I know some people say that Newcastle may have under-achieved last
year, but they got to the semi-final of the FA Cup and the last eight
of the UEFA Cup, and in my eyes - and a lot of people's eyes - this
is still a massive club.
"The stature of this club is massive and I really have a high regard
for the manager, Graeme Souness.
"He is one of the reasons I have decided to come here. He has been
unbelievable in all this and so too has the chairman.
"I could have stayed in London and kept my family down there.
"Everybody knows about Spurs, but I have chosen Newcastle United.
That says it all.
"Last season was really non-existent for me. I didn't figure much.
"But I did play at St James' Park in Chelsea's Carling Cup win and
the atmosphere was brilliant.
"When I arrived in Newcastle last night the first thing I did was
have a look around the stadium. Obviously, it was empty but it was
still daunting.
"I know how passionate the Newcastle fans are and I cannot wait to
play in front of them.
"I want this to be a big season for me as well as Newcastle and obviously
the World Cup at the end of it.
"As far as England are concerned, I need to stay fit and need to be
playing and after that I will just have to wait and see."

Freddy Shepherd on Parker:
"Scott has been our main target for a while, and we're delighted
that he has chosen to join us.
"He is our first signing of the summer, and will be a valuable addition
to our squad. He is still young but has a lot of experience, and we
welcome him to Newcastle and look forward to seeing him in a black
and white shirt." |
